It's "Wakes Week" in Hindle, and with the mill closed, Fanny Hawthorn relaxes by the seashore. She meets Alan Jeffcote, the mill owner's son, and they spend a few fun days in a hotel in Wales. However, their fun ends when their parents find out. When Hindle Wakes premiered in 1912, critics hailed it as the best play of the year. Its unsentimental portrayal of two young people seeking pleasure without commitment sparked moral outrage, fueling heated debates and making the play a hit.

Lecture | “Daylight at the Exit”: Women Translating Kafka

What does it mean for Kafka’s work that the first translations were by women? Michelle Woods examines this question in a lecture on Milena Jesenská and Willa Muir, and their roles in establishing Kafka as a globally influential writer. For years, both women have been misread and misrepresented: one was idealized as Kafka’s lover, the other faulted for the limitations of Kafka’s translations. Woods challenges these characterizations, re-centering the lives of these brilliant women in the story of Kafka and discussing their feminist impact on modern perceptions of his works.

Opening Reception | Judith Linhares: The river is moving, The blackbird must be flying

Since the late 1970s, Linhares’ work has been influential for many younger artists. However, the construction and style of her paintings are indebted, not only to literary and abstract painterly traditions, but to the radical, performative, and revolutionary poets of the 1950s West Coast scene. The river is moving, The blackbird must be flying marks an evolution in the artist’s practice in which the tactility and vibrancy of the paint itself takes center stage. For this exhibition, Linhares takes her title from a stanza of a poem by twentieth-century American poet Wallace Stevens, “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird.” The verse’s rhythmic repetition and sparse nature parallel Linhares’ own visual representation. Like words, which become more ambiguous and open-ended when put to line, meter, and rhyme, so too do Linhares’ figures of women, lovers, animals, flowers, and found objects. The blackbird, so available in the reader’s mind’s eye, is not a specific bird, but rather the ideal of one, much like the archetypes presented in Linhares’ own work. In paintings such as Kiss, 2024, the subjects are revealed through the structure of the painting and allow for multiple interpretations. A couple, reminiscent of Cycladic figurines, embrace atop a geometric quilt set against a dramatic backdrop of sky and mountains. The duo seem totally unaware of the giant lion leering towards them, whose mane appears as a sun, a flower, and pure abstraction all at once. Ranging from large-scale epic scenes to intimate still-lives, Linhares’ works allow viewers to partake in the universal joy of imagination.

Opening Reception | Keita Morimoto: To Nowhere and Back

Keita Morimoto’s paintings investigate the interplay of light and shadow, offering a reimagined perspective on the modern urban landscape. Rooted in classical techniques and infused with contemporary sensibilities, his works transform everyday scenes into cinematic tableaux that hover between reality and dream. Morimoto challenges viewers to uncover beauty in the mundane and magic in the overlooked by marrying meticulous observation with an otherworldly atmosphere. In 'To Nowhere and Back' at Almine Rech in New York City, he continues his exploration of light as a transformative force, turning the quotidian into the paranormal. Through the construction of liminal spaces, his paintings create thresholds between the concrete urban world and the ethereal realm of memory, inviting viewers to discover enchantment within the unnoticed.

The remarkable story of esteemed professor and feminist scholar Catharine R. Stimpson and Australian musicologist Elizabeth (Liz) Wood. Now in their 80s, they recall a time when living openly and loving unapologetically was a radical act. For Catharine, this jeopardized her career and relationships with her family. The stakes were even higher for Liz as the mother of four children at a time when judges routinely denied custody to lesbians. Driven by their fierce desire to be together at all costs, Liz battled in Australian family court to be able to bring the children to New York and forge a life with Catharine. Opening Reception | A New Sacred: Reinterpreted Christian Imagery, Iconography

A New Sacred is a two-person exhibition showcasing the works of Carolyn Oberst and Eden Seifu, who have reinterpreted Christian imagery, iconography, and concepts of power. Eden Seifu's unique aesthetic fuses and merges various visual influences, ranging from El Greco's elongated, fluid forms to the characters of commedia dell'arte. Carolyn Oberst, troubled by environmental degradation, created the works in The Crosses We Bear between 1990 and 1994. Of Jewish ethnicity and secular in belief, Oberst explained of the series, "I believed that, apart from its religious connotations, the cross shape would symbolize both pain and suffering, as well as a call to action."
