A reading by Lana Bastasic, Rachel Kushner, and Maaza Mengiste, followed by a conversation/Q&A and a reception/signing. Lana Bastasic is a Yugoslav-born writer. She is one of the founders of Escola Bloom literary school in Barcelona. Rachel Kushner's books have been translated into twenty-seven languages. Her fiction has been published in The New Yorker and The Paris Review, and her nonfiction in Harpers and The New York Times Magazine. Maaza Mengiste is a novelist, essayist, and photographer. Her work is available in Spanish, Swedish, French, German, Italian, Romanian, Turkish, and Finnish, with more translations forthcoming.

To mark the release of The Theran Spiral, Involute of a Circle, co-authors Cecilia Vicuña and James O’Hern will engage in a conversation with MC Kinniburgh (publisher), Amber Jacobs (English feminist philosopher), and Soledad Falabella (Chilean feminist scholar specializing in Gabriela Mistral and Indigenous poetries). “In these ominous times when Fas. Cism is gaining ground, The Theran Spiral celebrates an era in pre-patriarchal times when women were free to create an art that speaks to the future. Our focus is Akrotiri, in Thera, a town buried—like Pompei—by volcanic ash, for 3,000 years, that resurfaced in the 60s,” says Cecilia Vicuña. The book will be available for purchase.

7 Stories Up presents Yasna Voices, a group of Bulgarian a cappella singers whose performance reveals the disarming power and intimacy of the unaccompanied voice. Yasna Voices will present a unique performance in which audiences will be immersed in the earthy resonance of the ensemble's ancient singing style, and invited to participate in the sound-making as well. Yasna Voices is an expansive group of singers, sharing a passion for ensemble harmony, folk traditions, and experimentation. Weaving together traditional Bulgarian village-style songs with artfully arranged a cappella pieces, original compositions, inspired by and written for Yasna Voices, and spontaneous group improvisation, the ensemble reveals the disarming power and intimacy of the unaccompanied voice. Their interpretations of ancient songs tell timeless tales of sweet or forbidden love, horses and wild mountains, potent wine, pepper planting, the secrets of the moon, and the sun’s falling in love with a beautiful girl and her song.
