An afternoon of humanities events on the influence of James Reese Europe and the 369th Infantry (aka the Harlem Hellfighters) and early jazz during WWI. Lt. James Reese Europe, of the 369th, was an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger, and composer. In 1918, James Reese Europe made military and music history by being the first African American to lead troops into battle during World War One and to spread the 'jazz germ' throughout continental Europe.

Schedule:

1pm-Men of Bronze, a film by William Miles. The definitive story of the African-American soldiers of the 369th infantry regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters," who served with the French Army during WWI.

2pm-“Soldiers of the 369th” Panel Discussion and Q&A on 369th infantry, the African-American and Latino soldiers serving in WWI, James Reese Europe's legacy and influence on the use of jazz in Post-WWI U.S. Foreign Policy. Panelists: Marvin Haire and George Richardson. Moderated by Willard Jenkins.

5pm-James Reese Europe Film Retrospective. A look at film clips of Lt. James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hellfighters. Curated by Krin Gabbard.

6pm-“Music of James Reese Europe” Panel Discussion and Q&A. This panel will look at James Reese Europe's music and musical influence in France, as well as the instruments used by the soldiers. Randy Weston will preview a musical piece in preparation for his Feb. 25 concert of James Europe's music. Panelists: Randy Weston, Sergeant Herbert Trimble, George Richardson. Moderated by Willard Jenkins.
