Other | Ice Carving: Kasparaov vs. IBM Deep Blue Chess Match

An ice carving of giant chess pieces reproducing the legendary 1996 chess match in which chess master Gary Kasparov was defeated by IBM’s Deep Blue computer. Renowned ice-sculpting collective Okamoto Studios transformed four blocks of ice into giant chess pieces, which became part of a fourteen-piece replica of Gary Kasparov’s 1996 defeat by IBM’s Deep Blue – the first time a chess-playing computer outmaneuvered a reigning world champion. Audiences will be able to stroll among the frozen pieces starting at 8:00 a.m., and lunchtime visitors will be invited to warm up with free hot cocoa and holiday treats while enjoying a foot-stomping live performance by the Hungry March Band, NYC's legendary street brass march band.

Workshop | Citizen Cartography: Tracing Old New York

Many important buildings from New York’s landscape in the 19th and early 20th centuries are long gone, left only as traces on maps and collections throughout the NYPL. Citizen Cartographers will trace some of these important features from an early atlas such as Wm. Perris’ 1852 Maps of the City of New York. Only after we do this can we learn where to buy lumber or book a room or attend a play in 1852.

Talk | Asian American Comics in a “Post-Race” Era

This talk explores an emergent tradition of Asian American comics, such as Gene Leun Yang's 2006 National Book Award finalist American Born Chinese, which has had to contend with a long literary and visual legacy that has portrayed Asian Americans as the yellow peril, the perpetual foreigner, and the model minority. A writer in residence in the Library's Wertheim Study, Caroline Kyungah Hong is an assistant professor of English at Queens College CUNY, and her current research project is on Asian American comedy.

Book Signing | Artist Leo Fitzpatrick signs copies of his book Not Garbage

Not Garbage a book based on the exhibition Ray's A Laugh curated by the artist. Expounding on this exhibition, Not Garbage presents a selection of contemporary artists responding to the work of collage and correspondence artist Ray Johnson (1927-1995). Here, another generation of New York artists including Joe Bradley, Dan Colen, Adam McEwen, Leo Fitzpatrick, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Josh Smith, and Dash Snow, apply their own sense of wit and guile to the work of their forefather. These artists add personal twists to work that acknowledges the past, reflecting the importance of their own community. The individual means of communication that Johnson promulgated during his life remain a powerful force, still influencing the New York City art scene of today.

Author Reading | Timothy Snyder discusses his book Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin

The author discusses the deliberate mass murder of 14 million civilians in eastern Europe between during 1933 and 1945, including the Soviet Great Terror and the Nazi Holocaust. He begins from the observation that the lands where the Holocaust took place were also the sites of other German and Soviet policies of mass killing, and asks what we can learn from this juxtaposition about the Holocaust itself, the nature of the two regimes, and about the shape of the history of the twentieth century.
