Tour | West Harbor Walk

For approximately 19-20 miles (8-9 hours) at a moderate-brisk pace, follow the lesser known Western shore of New York Harbor through the cities of Jersey City and Bayonne, where you will explore Liberty State Park and its historic rail terminal; pass the site of the 1916 Black Tom Explosion, follow boardwalks over old docklands and through restored wetlands with many shorebirds; pass shipping cranes on the shore of Newark Bay; cross the Bayonne Bridge; and pass through the former sailors' home at Snug Harbor, ending at the Staten Island Ferry terminal at St. George (for ferry service back to Manhattan). This new-and-improved West Harbor Walk will take you over several new boardwalks and promenades completed in 2009. As the walk parallels Hudson-Bergen Light Rail for the first 12 miles, walkers interested in joining us for part of the walk may take the train back to Hoboken Terminal at several points. Stop briefly for lunch in Bayonne at noon at an intersection with several lunch options (fast food, diner, deli). Any weather.

Conference | The Tiger in You: Paper Tiger Television 30th Anniversary Celebration

What is radical media? What has it been in the past? What will it be in the future? For 30 years, the Paper Tiger Television (PTTV) video collective has inspired media-savvy community producers and activists around the world with shows that deliver critical analysis of the media, educate about the communications industry, and highlight issues ignored by mainstream information sources. In 1981 the Paper Tiger Collective, a group of artists, activists, and scholars, pioneered a radical public access show that challenged both the form and the content of broadcast television. Paper Tiger quickly developed a devoted following in the academic and activist communities and even in the art world. This two-day convention is part of the citywide 30th anniversary celebration of Paper Tiger Television. Coming on the heels of the Occupy Wall Street movement, this assembly promises new strategies for revolutionary media that will challenge alternative media makers to create a new methodology and product. The Museum of Modern Art plans to exhibit workshop projects created at the conference later this spring.

Talk | Operation Icebridge: Mapping Thin Ice Sheets in Antarctica

Hear polar scientist and explorer Nicholas Frearson recount tales from a recent expedition in (and over) Antarctica as one of the geophysicists involved in the flying lab known as Operation Icebridge, a DC-8 fitted out with such intriguing and exotic pieces of equipment as an Airborne Topographic Mapper, a Gravimeter, a Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor, a Multichannel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder, a Snow Radar, and a Ku-Band Radar Altimeter. Operation Icebridge scientists record data on the thickness and depth of Antarctic ice sheets and glacial movement, in the words of NASA, to “learn more about the trends that could affect sea-level rise and climate around the globe.” They learn about what the land under the ice looks like and can map it. See what Mr. Frearson and his colleagues discovered on this trip, and how polar exploration and mapping have changed since Shackleton’s day.

Opening Reception | André Saraiva's Love Letters, Paintings on French Letter Boxes

Street artist André Saraiva is perhaps best known for the creation of his "Mr. A" character which was featured last year in the award winning documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop." He made his own directorial debut in 2011 with his short film, "The Shoe," co-starring Leo Fitzpatrick and Annabelle Dexter-Jones. Saraiva has exhibited all over the world including shows at Colette, Palais de Tokyo and Air de Paris where he showed his love graffiti for the first time. For MOCA's landmark "Art in the Streets" show, he tagged up the museum's bathrooms with his colorful graffiti. His show -- his first solo exhibition in New York -- will include paintings on french letter boxes which he used to paint all over Paris and love notes on stationery, a somewhat anachronistic celebration of communication so closely tied to the romantic.

Discussion | Festival Neue Literatur Panel: Reinventing the Past

Literature is often a delving into the past, made all but involuntary because the past has returned to haunt the present. Whether the history in question is familial, political or ancient, traces of old trauma can cast the present in a new light. This panel, which will feature authors Chris Adrian, Catalin Dorian Florescu, Inka Parei and Linda Stift in conversation with Susan Bernofsky, explores the different ways in which the past can be put to work in the name of storytelling.
