Join a one-night pop-up shop in conjunction with the release of the catalogue for the exhibition I>The Young and the Recluse. In addition to the book sale and signing, there will be select prints from the exhibition and limited-edition accessories, prints, sculptures, jewelry, apparel and more from the gallery gift shop available for sale for one night only. The Young and the Recluse features the work of eight rising photographers from around the world. While the artists have each individually gained international attention through their online presence, the tactile context of a publication retains the character of the exhibition and allows the conversations among the works to continue beyond the exhibition run. Based on the fantastic positive response to the show from the public and out of our own personal love of the work, we believe they’re conversations worth sharing and continuing.

Opening Reception | Collage: Derrick Adams' Deconstruction Worker

Now buildings in New York are demolished usually by Chinese and Mexican workers - French philosophers were deconstructing contemporary thought in the 1960's, Picasso and company deconstructed African Art in 1907. Bird, Diz, Monk, Train, Ornette deconstructed swing, the blue note, the flattened fifth in the late 1940's into the 1960's. Scientists deconstructed the Atom bomb in the 1940's. Pollack and de Kooning deconstructed the visual plane. Duchamp and Hammons deconstructed the construct. MTV in the 1980's deconstructed video. Computers have made sampling music and imagery part of the deconstruct of daily life. With globalization – the internet, the iphone - culture globally is being sliced and diced rapidly daily. Dream states deconstruct ones daily experiences. This compression of multiplicities is a sign of the X generation that Derrick Adams is part of. The struggle of the artist today is dealing with The New New versus the New Old. This readjustment of cultural symbols is the new way of thinking and very much part of his new work.

Opening Reception | Photography: Joel Sternfeld's First Pictures

This exhibition is comprised of four distinct bodies of work made between 1971 and 1980, the majority of which have never before been published or exhibited. In these bodies of work, Sternfeld develops conceptual and formal strategies that are fundamental to his practice over the past four decades. Such strategies include the building of narrative, elements of humor and irony, a politicized view of America, as well as a concern for community, social conditions, and the environment. Shown: "Nags Head, North Carolina, (#29), June-August 1976," Pigment print, 8 1/2 x 12 3/4 inches.

Opening Reception | Sculpture by Martha Walker

From the artist: "The process of making art is frequently wracked with an obsession to express through visual medium our individuality; our self…some sort of proof that we exist, separate and individually from all others. We declare our unique existence through our work. Mortality defines the ultimate anxiety: with every day that passes, every dawn, the passage of our lives, our aging, is reaffirmed. We move closer to our demise each moment that we live, intensifying our need to produce something that we may leave behind that defines our selves. Time is the ultimate commodity. What takes time to produce is a reflection of the passage of our lives. Our obsession to produce some mark that is clearly our own is at the heart of the creative impulse." Shown: "Survivors" (2008)

Author Reading | Evan Hughes discusses his book Literary Brooklyn: The Writers of Brooklyn and the Story of American City Life

The rich literary life now flourishing in Brooklyn is part of a larger, fascinating history. With a dynamic mix of literary biography and urban history, the author takes us on a tour of Brooklyn past and present and reveals that hiding in Walt Whitman's Fort Greene Park, Hart Crane's Brooklyn Bridge, the raw Williamsburg of Henry Miller's youth, Truman Capote's famed house on Willow Street, and the contested streets of Jonathan Lethem's Boerum Hill is the story of more than a century of life in America's cities.
