A completely original creation of Coney Island, the Mermaid Parade is the nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events. The "Voice of the Lakota Nation"–the independent, non-profit radio station–has been a unifying force for the Lakota people since it first began broadcasting in 1983 from a hill near Porcupine, South Dakota. This feature explores the grass-roots activism that generated the idea of tribally–controlled media and those who struggled to make it a reality–now an everyday miracle in the lives of the people in the widely scattered communities of the Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River, and Rosebud Indian Reservations. Introduced by Tiokasin Ghosthorse and director Bräuning will be in attendance.

Reading | Staceyann Chin/Jennifer Johns/ArtBattles/Urban Word NYC, spoken word

Join urban green pioneer Majora Carter and friends in celebration of our planet with innovative and powerful spoken word artists, musicians, and visual artists. Staceyann Chin is a fulltime artist. A resident of New York City and a Jamaican national, she has been an “out poet and political activist” since 1998. From the rousing cheers of the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe to one-woman shows Off-Broadway to poetry workshops in Denmark and London to co-writer and performer in the Tony-nominated Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, Chin credits the long list of "things she has done" to her grandmother's hard-working history and the pain of her mother's absence. Innovative, driven, compassionate, and powerful are all words that have been used to describe Oakland, California born singer/songwriter and spoken word artist Jennifer Johns. Now, with the release of her debut album Heavyelectromagneticsoularpoeticjunglehop, the listening public is getting the chance to build an opinion too. ArtBattles is a live, competitive art show for up-and-coming artists. It was created to provide a platform for young “unknowns” to be discovered and sell their work. Artbattles illustrates both the struggle and competitive nature of New York City’s art scene today and stands as a testimony to the strength of the creative spirit. Founded on the belief that teenagers can and must speak for themselves, Urban Word NYC has been at the forefront of the youth spoken word poetry and hip hop movements in New York City since 1999. Since then, Urban Word has served thousands of teens with free writing and performance opportunities, local and national poetry slams, as well as college fairs, open mics and festivals.

Performance | on the other side of the glass plate, she wore nothing, a performance by Seen Performance

When you're there, the show begins. The stage is scattered with wooden dowels and PVC fittings, but "performers" are absent. Three women in pretty dresses talk of clothing and whimsically burst into tiny ensemble dances. You build the set, playing to decipher the correct construction method, until two women take the stage. Over the next hour, they go round and round to the sound of David Morneau's live-mixed score, taking a transformative journey of self-discovery. Performance by Meredith Blouin, David Morneau, Jen Painter, Amiti Perry, Chelsea Retzloff, and Anna Wueller.

Screening | USA's The Great Squeeze: Surviving the Human Project (2008)

This film explores our current ecological and economic crisis stemming from our dependence on cheap and abundant energy. Although our actions for the past 150 years have lifted our civilization to new heights, it has come at a tremendous price. We are now at a point where humanity's demands for natural resources far exceed the earth's capacity to sustain us. The extraction and the consumption of these resources in the past two centuries have changed our climate and ecosystems so significantly, that a new geological era had to be created. Selected at several film festivals around the world, The Great Squeeze features outstanding experts in many fields, such as economist Lester Brown founder of The Earth Policy Institute and the Worldwatch Institute, Richard Heinberg world renowned Peak Oil expert, Edward O. Wilson legendary biologist, Alexandra Cousteau leading advocate for marine ecosystems, author Howard Kunstler, paleoclimatologist Jim White and many more.
