Screening | Hilla Medalia’s After the Storm (2009), a Documentary on Hurricane Katrina's Victims

This film reveals a New Orleans that most of us have never seen before. The film follows twelve young people who, after Hurricane Katrina, are chosen by Broadway professionals to perform in a community production of the musical Once on This Island—itself set in the wake of a hurricane—as a benefit to fund the restoration of a local community center. Israeli-born, New York–based filmmaker Medalia, known for her documentaries 39 Pounds of Love and To Die in Jerusalem, captures the strength and determination of the young performers as they act out stories that parallel their own—and creates a document of a resilient New Orleans community in the process.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

While making the most of the comic absurdity of being pawed by nerds, being asked to serve cookies at a seminar, and retaliating with fashion experiments, De Cari also seriously explores the world of elite mathematics and the role of women in science.

Author Reading | Chris O’Dell discusses Miss O’Dell: My Hard Days and Long Nights with the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and the Women They Loved

She was in the studio when the Beatles recorded The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be, and when Paul recorded "Hey Jude," she sang in the chorus. She was at Ringo's kitchen table when George Harrison said, "You know, Ringo, I'm in love with your wife." And Ringo replied, "Better you than someone we don't know." She typed the lyrics to George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. She lived with George and Pattie Boyd at Friar Park, developed a crush on Eric Clapton, and unwittingly got involved in the famous love story between Eric and Pattie. This is the story of an ordinary woman who lived the dream of millions -- to be part of rock royalty's trusted inner circle. Illustrated with private photographs and jam-packed with intimate anecdotes, it is a backstage pass to some of the most momentous events in rock history.

The latest volume of White's memoirs—a frank and compelling recounting of the social and sexual lives of New York’s cultural and intellectual crowd in the tumultuous 1970s. A moving, candid and brilliant portrait of a time and place; a book of gossip, a book about sex and genius and living on the breadline; a rounded and stereoscopic vision from one of the most brilliant and engaging writers of his generation—and a book that, movingly, celebrates art and friendship as two of the most important components of the life well-lived.
