Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Lecture | Painting in the Shadow of the Guillotine

With Elizabeth Mansfield, Associate Professor of Art History. As the sans-culottes took to the streets during the French Revolution, artists likewise sought to influence the political situation in the wake of July 14, 1789. Painters like Jacques-Louis David and Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun are famous for expressing their political allegiances in artworks produced during the Revolution. But the Jacobin David and the royalist émigré Vigée-Lebrun mark only the extremes of political sympathies. Most artists - like most French citizens - held views somewhere between these two poles. This lecture will look at the Revolutionary art of François-André Vincent, who challenged David’s authority over visual culture during the Terror.

Dr. Frank Druffner, of the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach, where Domin’s papers are kept, is co-editor of Die Liebe im Exil, a volume of correspondence between the poet and her husband, art historian Erwin Walter Palm, during the years of exile and beyond. Druffner will be joined by exhibition curator and Yale Professor Paul North, to talk about Domin’s efforts to get her husband published here in the States and about the general situation of German emigrants in New York. Lecture | “The Panorama: Painting the 'All Embracing' View”

In the Victorian era, panoramas depicting 360 degree views of landscapes, cityscapes and battles were popular attractions in the U.S. and Europe, enabling their viewers to “travel” without leaving home. They were a unique art form created by painting on a circular canvas that completely surrounded viewers, making them feel part of the scene. Many panoramas were shown in 19th century New York City, to the delight of their enthralled audiences. With Suzanne Wray, author, lecturer and board member of the Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America.

Author Reading | Elizabeth Heyert discusses her book The Narcissists

Inspired by the myth of Narcissus and Warhol’s Screen Tests, Heyert presents a body of modern portraiture shot through a one-way mirror that challenges Richard Avedon’s notion of the photographic portrait as a relationship between two people. Former architectural photographer Heyert resumes her role as observer and voyeur in this fascinating third volume, taking us through the looking glass, capturing subjects unaware through a one-way mirror in a series of 15-minute photo sessions. The volume includes 24 of these portraits—a twelve-year-old beauty queen dressed as Barbie, an aging male bodybuilder, a bejeweled socialite, and a Marilyn Monroe look-alike, among them—caught gazing into their own eyes. On this evening, Heyert will be interviewed by author Stacey D’Erasmo.

Discussion | Meet the artists from One Minute More

With Kate Gilmore, Jamie Isenstein, Oliver Lutz, Clifford Owens, Georgia Sagri, Aki Sasamoto, and Josh Tonsfeldt. The New York-based artists in this group exhibition create performance-based videos, photographs, and sculptural installations that experiment with various approaches to presenting and documenting durational actions or live events. Some of the artists structure their work around carefully choreographed, task-based activities relating to self-imposed constraints, while others develop more intricate, narrative scenarios responding to a given environment. In both cases, the artists alternatively explore a range of issues relating to labor and stamina, risk and vulnerability, as well as questions of identity that together form of a larger investigation into the physical and mental conditions of contemporary life.
