Dance Performance | Brian Lobel's Hold My Hand and We're Halfway There, an Interactive Dance Performance and Installation

An interactive performance installation that uses four televisions, 12 headsets, a sturdy bed and 100 classic musicals to explore issues of isolation, community, secret pleasures and the age-old question, When are you alone? And when are you lonely? Every day from 9am-5pm for 5 days – the equivalent of a 40hr work week – Brian Lobel will dance nonstop in his bedroom, inviting any and all passersby to join him, to dance with him, to watch a musical film of their choice or to simply stand inside and watch. The piece links Depression-era dance marathons, where contestants danced until they dropped in pursuit of fame and fortune, to young boys dancing in their bedroom after school, where they too dance until they drop, often hoping for fame and fortune. The piece is both fun and frightening, exhausting and exhilarating and a reflection on loneliness, labor, and labors of love. Because the performance is durational, audience members can come and go at any time and stay for as long as they choose.

Conference | “Critical Strategies in Art and Media: Perspectives of New Cultural Practices”

A roundtable conference of digital theorists and practitioners on the future of cultural intelligence and freedoms, addressing issues such as: - Beyond the obsolete models of artist or author as genius and their fetish objects, what collective and collaborative practices are inventing new terrains and flows? - As information and communication technologies saturate our world, how is art giving way to new forms of cultural symbolic manipulation? - Can we identify new models to replace the auteur and the artwork? If so, where do they come from and what might that say about the future of critical practices? - What new kinds of "virtual" spaces are opening up for cultural practice in electronic media? As "old media" begin to collapse under the pressures of the virtual, what new media can we find? - How are didactic illustration and channeled dissidence giving way to new forms of surprise and intensity? - What strategies elude the creative industries' seemingly infinite appetite for things radical? Are there any strategies that can elude being reduced to styles in the service of sales, or are critical practices doomed to play cat and mouse with the forces of consumerism? With: Ted Byfield/Nettime, Steve Kurtz/ Critical Art Ensemble, Amanda McDonald-Crowley/Eyebeam, Claire Pentecost/Continental Drift, and Peter Lamborn Wilson/Temporary Autonomous Zone. Moderators: Konrad Becker/World-Information Institute, and Jim Fleming /Autonomedia.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Opening Reception | 2 Solo Exhibitions: Ryan Bradley's Pretty Party / Marc Dennis' American Tourists

Exploring the true nature of beauty through the deconstruction of the figure, Bradley's large-scale tightly rendered pastel paintings of the female figure further delve into the culture of vanity, centering concerns a round aesthetic perfection and the pursuit of the indefatigable self. Visual representations of sexuality throughout history have played key roles in the culture of sex, ranging from open display to absolute censorship. Brooklyn-based painter Dennis presents a new body of work based on female flashers calling into question sexuality, pornography, fine art and fantasy. The artist leads an imaginative reconsideration of a traditional style of figurative painting, addressing the subversive potential of beauty and pleasure through a very modern lens, that of the cell phone camera. By addressing the cultural phenomenon known as "sexting," the means of exposing oneself via SMS (Short Message Service), Dennis' paintings are a response to the experience of contemporary notions of voyeurism.

Opening Reception | 2 Solo Shows: Julie A. McConnell / Marie Sarni

McConnell's sixth solo exhibition, Deliberations on Equilibrium, questions how the objects we use to celebrate life threaten it. McConnell photographs a 21st-century Venus rising from the sea, the human body engulfed by party trash, newspapers and washed-up mylar balloons inscribed with sentimental, life-affirming messages. Her installation of animal assemblages surrounded by encroaching balloon flotillas underscores the fragility of existence in an ecologically imbalanced world. Sarni's paintings, floating shapes across a dark field of black, imply the impermanence of our world and the end of our lives. Change, fleeting moments, time passing, fading memories and order evolving from chaos are constantly present. It is the hope of the artist that her visions of a personal world stir memories in the minds of viewers and causes them to re-conceptualize the world most of us accept as ordinary and stable.

Opening Reception | 4-Part Exhibition: A Maze of Milieu / Color Immersion / Idiosyncratic Expressions / Masters of the Imagination

A Maze of Milieu is an enchanted voyage through eddying colors, majestic landscapes and smooth panoramas that dare viewers to be swept away by the brilliance of the world around us. Pulsing with vibrant energy, Color Immersion displays the expressive, central role that an artist’s palette plays in the creation of a painting. Crafting their personal inspirations in a variety of styles, this exhibition features a collection of painters that are united in their understanding of the intimate relationship between color and emotion. Idiosyncratic Expressions offers viewers a deeper story through twisted sculptures of recycled aluminum, veneers applied to natural cuts of wood that appear at first glance to be paintings, and where Americana and Japanese manga collide. Audiences will be moved by the striking and distinctive viewpoints presented in the works of art in this spectacular collective. Masters of the Imagination offers a rare chance to experience the nuances of fine art by Latin American artists, not merely with the eyes, but the heart. Featured Artists: Urmil Jain, Iva Milanova, Daniel Sewell, Zoë Sherwood, Marc C. Slootjes, Soon Ro Yoon, Gloria S. Ferreira, Cary Gang, Virginia Hernàndez, Samantha Churchill, Alla Kosarevskaya, niki.b, Francisco Agraz, Marcela Albitos, Giancarlo Bertini, Rosane Demeterco Bussman, Christine Drummond, Sonia Ferrari, Ana Maria Garcés R., Pedro Leon, Mayumi Luppi, Javier Peña, Maria Laura Pini, Giovanny Sanchez Tot, Isabel Santta Cecilia, and Israel Vazquez. Opening Reception | Eli Ping's Full Bleed: Canvas Sculpture

Ping makes work that challenges the accepted notion of painting and sculpture. Exploring both formal and material conventions, Ping’s sculpture exhibits properties of both mediums. Wrapped and twisted canvas coated with hundreds of layers of pigmented glassy resin transforms the abstract expressionist gesture into three dimensions. Color and movement combine to become action sculpture. Conversely, paintings assume the mantle of sculpture. Monochromatic surfaces are built up by layering canvas and thick impasto paint, then carved and gouged to create dimensional reliefs. Colorful wall works evoke arrested, expressionistic brushstrokes, expanding painting into the third dimension. Ping’s dissolution of the distinction between painting and sculpture reveals a fertile terrain, lush with possibility and promise.

Opening Reception | Exhibitions: Matt Held's facebook portraits / Johnny Madsen's Red, Yellow and the Blues

The culmination of a series of portraits begun in 2008, this exhibition features more than 40 canvases painted from facebook profile photos. They encompass works which are funny, cool, quirky, and sometimes disturbing. Held's project brings portraiture to the masses via facebook's pandemic social networking site, inviting people to become part of his "group"-which has more than 6,000 members-by volunteering to have their portrait painted. The stipulation is that Held himself chooses which image to render, claiming a position of power as the artist. Held has exhibited nationally, including solo shows at Optic Nerve Arts, Portland; as well as Garage Walk and Stella's, both in Seattle. Selected group shows include Haskins Lab at Yale University; Gallery 364, Brooklyn; and NutureArt, CUE Art Foundation, and Artists Space, all in New York City. Depicting psychologically charged, provocative, and mysterious figures, Madsen's thickly impastoed acrylic surfaces pulsate with energetically painted primary colors. A legendary rock and blues musician in Denmark since the 1980s, Madsen has been painting for thirty years, and enjoyed notoriety as an artist in the past decade with shows in Denmark, Venice, and London. We are excited to have the opportunity to premier his work in the United States as part of this international tour. Born in Thyborøn, Madsen began drawing and painting at an early age and has developed his practice as a painter in tandem with his musical career. He has exhibited his work widely since the early 1980s, and recently mounted a solo show at Mews42 Gallery in London. Madsen has his own gallery on Fanø, where he paints and exhibits his work. Madsen will perform a selection of his own music. Shown: Held's "Rick" (2009, oil on canvas)

Opening Reception | Juergen Teller's Paradis -- photo nude study of two women amongst the masterpieces of Louvre

The photographs were originally commissioned for the French magazine, Paradis, and will appear in a leather bound limited edition book available at the end of September 2009. Blurring the distinction between his commercial and non-commercial work, Teller takes a story-telling approach to this series, in which he revisits two of his previous subjects – Charlotte Rampling and Raquel Zimmermann. Shot alone one evening at the Musee du Louvre in Paris, this nude study features large-scale photographs of the two women as they move amongst the masterpieces housed in the museum and captures the intimacy between photographer and subject. The women's lack of vanity is revealed as they are shot at an uncomfortable proximity, blending their bodies with Classical statues and standing before Leonardo's Mona Lisa.

Opening Reception | Multimedia Artworks: Allan Wexler's Overlook

Works from the last five years by Wexler, whose thirty-year career resists easy classification. Part of a group of artists who began to question the perceived divide between disciplines in the late 1960's, Wexler draws from the fields of the visual arts, architecture, and design to examine art's place and purpose. He explores the idea of function, posing the question: Is it art when it looks like a chair? The exhibition will also provide an overview of Wexler's recent public projects, made in collaboration with Ellen Wexler, including Overlook, which opens this fall in Brooklyn. Commissioned by the Long Island Railway and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, this monumental installation, located in the atrium of the new Atlantic Railway Terminal, evokes the rocky overlooks found in national parks that encourage travelers to pause and view the scene below.

Opening Reception | NATURE AS ARTIFICE: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art

A major survey of new work by contemporary Dutch artists who, over the past twenty years, have taken contemporary Holland as their point of departure. In keeping with the golden age of Dutch landscape painting four hundred years ago, a new visual statement on the landscape has emerged from the Netherlands. Expressed through the modern mediums of photography and video art, this new imagining of the Dutch landscape is urbanized and altered, depicting the Netherlands as the most artificial country in the world.

Opening Reception | New Paintings: Trine Bumiller's New Work - Half Light

Bumiller's new series layers a collage of panels with subtle color shifts, organic silhouettes and abstract patterns. Each panel is connected by a silhouette of branches supplying structure from nature's bend and stretch. As before, the artist's themes are worked through by layering opposites that develop into something: a reflection, a conversation, a flip book of memories. Bumiller regularly exhibits in Colorado, Chicago and New York, and in 2005 had a solo show at the Museum of Fine Art in Las Cruces, NM. She currently lives and works in Denver. Opening Reception | Solo Show: Jason Dodge's When I woke up, there was a note in my pocket explaining what had happened

The physical material in Jason Dodge’s work is often ordinary. Dodge’s interests lie in the potential narratives that are formed from what we can project on these things. These things are ways of connecting us to people, to lives, to the natural world, and scientific phenomena. A furnace, for example, is connected to gas, water and electricity in the basement and from this fixed point touches the people who live in the building. Attached to the furnace is a complex network of pipes, and wires flowing water, electricity, and gas, connecting us from our homes, and filtering outward to power generators and storage facilities, gas manes and valves, reservoirs and the Hudson River, aquifers and dams, rainwater and oceans. From these far away places the water eventually finds its way back to us, to our bodies and to our skin. When the furnace breaks there comes a moment of disconnect. The electricity and water cease, the gas is disconnected and cold comes throughout the building. The removable parts are then replaced, a new furnace is installed, and ultimately the old furnace becomes fractured like lost things. Dodge recently had a solo project at the Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Germany. Current group exhibitions include “Plus Général En Particular,” Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou, France, “The Quick and the Dead,” Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, and “Scorpios Garden,” at Temporäre Kunsthalle in Berlin where the artist lives and works.

Opening Reception | THE BETTER HALF: Artist Couples on Display

Many professional artists marry other artists. In the first half of the 20th century, it was unusual, with a few outstanding examples such as Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. As women gained more equality, the number of successful women artists increased and artists married to artists became more frequent. Now in the 21st Century, it is not uncommon for artists to be married to artists. The Better Half presents young artist couples who are balancing careers, creating art and being married to another artist. A diversity of backgrounds and artistic approaches are represented. Artist couples featured in the exhibit include: Chris Bors and Ketta Ioannidou, Daniel Davidson and Tricia Keightley, Jennifer Burbank and Chris Coffin, Linda Ganjian and Jesse Lambert, Liz-N-Val, Donald Porcaro and Leslie Wayne. The Better Half will run from September 10th to October 29th

Concert | ITP Music Festival

Featuring the following acts: Balún (pictured) is an electro–acoustic dream–pop outfit from San Juan, Puerto Rico whose sound and influences can most easily be spotted in bands like Ulrich Schnauss, the Icelandic group Múm and Scottish wizards Boards of Canada. Their sound is one of soft and sweet rhythmic sound collages—simple guitar riffs, subdued glitchy beats and sounds of bells, strings and accordian accompanied by Angelica's child–like dreamy singing. Her singing is reminiscent of the type of quiet, low voiced song a child absent mindedly sings to herself while engrossed in drawing or making a princess' crown out of field flowers. The sound of Noise Floor Music, Roy Vanegas's solo music project, is an amalgam of ambient textures, downtempo rhythms, and mellifluous constructions. It's a slow mix of post–rock and electronica. (A fitting classification might be “post electronica.”) The music exhibits the influences of Pärt, Boards of Canada, and GY!BE. current_working_directory combines the lushness of shoegaze with the texture of the electronic, yielding songs equally full of harmony as of beats: electrogaze. Cassettenova (né Ari Joseph) is an indulgent instrumental polygamist, married to many in the service of music. His work spans bmore remixes, sound design, theatrical scoring, lo–fi production, instrument building, old school Brazilian record spinning and getting his ass kicked by polyrhythms and Deerhoof chord progressions. Ergo, he's an indecisive prick that won't make you any promises about teaching you blues guitar. He is debuting a new work called “pesquisa”, never before performed and probably not yet conceived as of this writing.
