Dance Performance | Brian Lobel's Hold My Hand and We're Halfway There, an Interactive Dance Performance and Installation

An interactive performance installation that uses four televisions, 12 headsets, a sturdy bed and 100 classic musicals to explore issues of isolation, community, secret pleasures and the age-old question, When are you alone? And when are you lonely? Every day from 9am-5pm for 5 days – the equivalent of a 40hr work week – Brian Lobel will dance nonstop in his bedroom, inviting any and all passersby to join him, to dance with him, to watch a musical film of their choice or to simply stand inside and watch. The piece links Depression-era dance marathons, where contestants danced until they dropped in pursuit of fame and fortune, to young boys dancing in their bedroom after school, where they too dance until they drop, often hoping for fame and fortune. The piece is both fun and frightening, exhausting and exhilarating and a reflection on loneliness, labor, and labors of love. Because the performance is durational, audience members can come and go at any time and stay for as long as they choose.

Screening | Swedish director Roy Andersson introduces 3 of his student films

The director will be present for screenings of the following films, all of which are in Swedish with English subtitles. Besöka sin son (Visiting One’s Son) (1967) Over the course of a meal, the father of two adult children has an increasingly difficult time keeping his opinions to himself and hiding his disapproval of his son’s lifestyle—not to mention his mustache. 9 min. Hämta en cykel (To Fetch a Bike) (1968) Even in this early short, Andersson proved to be a master at portraying the drama of the quotidian. A minimalistic study of waking up on the wrong side of the bed, To Fetch a Bike shows two young lovers getting ready for a new day. Before the boyfriend can head to work, he must first fetch his bike from the attic with the help of his grumpy, monosyllabic girlfriend. 17 min. Lördagen den 5.10. (Saturday October 5) (1969) Andersson captures the essence of an easy-breezy weekend shared by two working-class lovers. Bernt meets his sweet-as-pie girlfriend, Marianne, as she finishes her shift at the bakery, and takes her to visit friends on the outskirts of town. The girls horse around, the guys prepare the garden for winter, and everyone goes for a brisk walk, leaving poor Marianne in bed with a cold the following day. 48 min.

Performance | performance installation: COVERS

Three wearable sculptures, handmade of mostly recycled synthetic materials using classic crochet techniques and connected into one large crocheted sculpture, will be entered, separated and transformed into evolving images by performers Carrie Ahern, Jillian Hollis and Agata Oleksiak. The performance installation will raise questions of how one's own desires are projected onto the static objects one sees in store windows and investigate how our desires shift when the objects become live women, both moving and changing the shape of the objects, and vulnerable to the audience's gaze. What is the residual relationship to the objects once disinhabited by the performers and left as a new static installation?

Concert | Argentine Romantic Songs: Lost and Found

This concert is the result of extensive research by musicologist Bernardo Illari and features hitherto unknown pieces by Juan Pedro Esnaola (1808-1878). Esnaola is one among the earliest composers from what would become Argentina whose work has survived to the present. Born in Buenos Aires, Esnaola was a leading musician in his time who composed songs with piano accompaniment with texts written by the most distinguished poets of the day. His work also included orchestral, salon, and religious music (most of it now lost). Performing at the event will be soprano Patricia González and pianist Elvia L. Puccinelli. González has sung opera, oratorio and chamber music at venues throughout the Americas and Spain. She has recorded contemporary chamber music with flute and piano, and a monographic CD dedicated to the music of Juan Pedro Esnaola. Puccinelli is active as a collaborative pianist, vocal coach, and chamber musician at a variety of national and international venues.

Screening | Contemporary Indonesian Cinema: Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly (2008)

In a departure from the short films for which the Indonesian filmmaker Edwin is celebrated, this is a kaleidoscopic and compelling feature film. In a series of minimal, slightly surreal tales, characters loosely linked by their minority status as Chinese-Indonesians are set within a contemporary urban Indonesia beset by social and racial tension. 77 min. In Indonesian with English subtitles. Also playing is Edwin's short Dajang Soembi, the Woman Who Was Married to a Dog (2004). Following the examples of silent cinema, the director Edwin uses expressionistic sets reminiscent of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and plot overtones of Oedipus Rex to retell an Indonesian folk tale about a beautiful but dull-witted princess who marries a dog. 7 min.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear. Following will be a performance by Glasser.
