Forum | “A New Landscape: Can NYC Keep Affordable Housing in Sight?”

The current economic turmoil is taking a tremendous toll. Home foreclosures are common, market-rate condominium sales have stalled, owners of over-leveraged developments are defaulting and unemployment is on the rise. How are neighborhoods faring in the recession? Can Mayor Bloomberg's market-driven affordability incentives continue to work? Are there sufficient government resources to take advantage of declining real estate costs and other opportunities? What's working, and what's next? With: Rafael Cestero, Commissioner, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development; Gary Hattem, Managing Director, Community Development Finance Group, Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation; Ron Moelis, CEO, L+M Development Partners; Ismene Speliotis, Executive Director, ACORN Housing Corporation; and moderator Manny Fernandez, reporter, The New York Times.

Opening Reception | Free as Air and Water: An Exhibition and a Symposium

This is an exhibition of diverse works exploring the confluence of art, access to resources, human rights, political ecology and environmental justice. It will examine the spirit of a historic quote by Peter Cooper: “Education should be Free as Air and Water.” Recognizing the difference between then (1859) and now (2009), the privatization of air, water and land has significantly impacted the environment and has created many challenges for citizens and subjects. Free as Air and Water will pose questions about our contemporary moment, linking a broad set of issues such a political ecology and the role of art in relation to the environment. Artists participating include: Allora & Calzadilla, Amy Balkin, Robert Bordo, Bruce High Quality, Ross Cisneros, Amy Franceschini and Free Soil, Andrea Geyer, Hans Haacke, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Runo Lagomarsino, Marjetica Potrč, Temporary Services, Oscar Tuazon, and Lidwien Van de Ven, among others. In connection with the exhibition, there will be a panel discussions: "Free as Air and Water Symposium I: Artistic responses to Self-Sustainability and Climate Change" that will take place from 5-7pm. The symposium will take place at 7 E. 7th St., 2nd floor.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Performance | Performance installation: COVERS

Three wearable sculptures, handmade of mostly recycled synthetic materials using classic crochet techniques and connected into one large crocheted sculpture, will be entered, separated and transformed into evolving images by performers Carrie Ahern, Jillian Hollis and Agata Oleksiak. The performance installation will raise questions of how one's own desires are projected onto the static objects one sees in store windows and investigate how our desires shift when the objects become live women, both moving and changing the shape of the objects, and vulnerable to the audience's gaze. What is the residual relationship to the objects once disinhabited by the performers and left as a new static installation?

Discussion | Fred Kaplan discusses his book 1959: The Year Everything Changed

Conventional historical wisdom focuses on the sixties as the era of pivotal change that swept the nation, yet, as Kaplan argues, it was 1959 that ushered in the wave of tremendous cultural, political, and scientific shifts that would play out in the turbulent decade that followed. Pop culture exploded in upheaval with the rise of artists like Jasper Johns, Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, and Miles Davis. Court rulings unshackled previously banned books. Political power broadened with the onset of civil rights laws and protests. The sexual and feminist revolutionists took their first steps with the Birth Control pill. America entered the war in Vietnam, and a new style in superpower diplomacy took hold. Drawing fascinating parallels between the United States of 1959 and the country today, exactly 50 years later.
