Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Lecture | Writing About Coffee, Reading In Cafés: Literature and Coffeehouses in Early Modern France

Thierry Rigogne, History Department, Fordham University presents “Writing About Coffee, Reading In Cafés: Literature and Coffeehouses in Early Modern France.” Well before Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Parisian cafés have shared a strong affinity with literature. In the seventeenth century, it was books, from travel accounts to medical treatises, that introduced the French to what was then a new, exotic, Oriental beverage. Writers immediately patronized the first coffeehouses, where they could discuss literature and much else, while regular patrons went to cafés to read newspapers or pamphlets. In this talk, Thierry Rigogne will explore the connections between cafés and literature in seventeenth and eighteenth-century France, a time during which they shaped each other’s development and created the figure of the literary café.

Lecture | “Surgeries in Search of Disorders: Intersex and Circumcision in American History”

Elizabeth Reis of the University of Oregon will explore how so-called "normalizing" genital surgeries have been performed on infants for non-medical reasons throughout American history. In the case of intersex, social factors, such as the potential for marriage and the fear of homosexuality, in particular, have motivated these surgeries since the early 19th century. Similarly, male circumcision has been motivated by social rather than medical concerns, the incidence increasing and coinciding with the fear of masturbation in 19th-century America.
