Birdwatching | Special Bird Walk featuring Bird Sculpture Artist
This special Bird Walk with artist Matthias Garff (currently in residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program) will showcase his bird sculptures--a new body of work created during his residency. Garff's sculptures depict various bird species that live among us--often unnoticed, yet closely connected to our shared environment. Created from found materials, the works are the result of five months of close observation of NYC's birdlife. During this event, participants will scout out Garff's sculptures installed in situ , while also spotting real birds in their habitats. This is a one-afternoon-only outdoor installation and a unique opportunity to experience Garff's birds in their natural habitat. Everyone who spots all the hidden species will receive a small reward! This event will also include a guided tour by Garff together with Hannah Kirshenbaum, avid birder and founder of NYC Queer Birders. No supplies or equipment are necessary, but feel free to bring along binoculars or cameras if you wish.In case of rain, the event will be canceled.

Take a tour of Room to Move: Dance Theater Workshop and Alternative Histories of Downtown Dance, an exhibition about how Dance Theater Workshop grew from a need for space into a lasting model of support for artists. Dance Theater Workshop provided not only space to create, but also offered classes and professional development for artists, subsidized video recordings of performances, and gave artists administrative support. For many individual artists, it was the first time that they did not have to manage every aspect of a production by themselves, and this freed up time for creativity and experimentation. Over time, Dance Theater Workshop became a crucial venue for artists in the downtown scene. A number of choreographers now well known all over the world, including Mark Morris, Donald Byrd, Bebe Miller, and Bill T. Jones, all got their start at the Dance Theater Workshop. Constructed from 1803 to 1812, the building was an early expression of the City's cosmopolitanism. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Each tour is one hour, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with an assigned docent. Start times: 10:30 am, 12 pm, 1:30 pm
