Lecture | Soviet Yogis – Who Were They? (in-person and online)

The history of yoga’s metamorphoses from marginalized spiritual-militaristic tradition in India to commercialized mega-business associated with neoliberal notions of personal wellness has received a lot of scholarly attention in the West. But the 20 th century transformation of yoga into an exportable mind-body practice took a different route into the Soviet Union, where yoga was alternately banned, and officially embraced at the highest levels. In this talk, I use the framework of contemporary ecological economics and Degrowth theory to show how in the post-war period, Soviet authorities could accommodate yoga as technology of growth and expansion (for instance, to help the cosmonauts conquer space), but not as a rejection of the fundamental imperative of extraction-based growth and ‘progress’ pursued by both sides of the Cold War. In the time provided, I will try to highlight a few case studies, as well as encourage us to think about the connection between yoga as a practice to regulate individual metabolism and yoga as a commentary on the Marx-inspired notion of ‘metabolic rift.’ Speaker Yvonne Howell is Professor of Russian and Global Studies at the University of Richmond.

Lecture | Thinking About Absence in Museums

In this talk, Benedicte Savoy will look at the emptiness that art and cult objects leave in their place of origin when, in the course of history, through armed conflict, colonial occupation or economic asymmetries, they have been moved to be displayed in (mostly Western) museums - with all the political, economic and epistemological implications that this entails. Bénédicte Savoy is Professor of Modern Art History at the Technische Universität Berlin.

Opening Reception | Willem de Kooning: Endless Painting

Curated by Cecilia Alemani, director and chief curator of High Line Art, this exhibition comprises paintings dating from 1944 through 1986 and two sculptures: Clamdigger (1972), and the monumental Standing Figure (1969-84). A pioneering figure of the postwar era, de Kooning explored the expressive potential of color, line, and space and continuously challenged the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. Through the considered placement of late paintings including Untitled V (1982), on loan from the Museum of Modern Art, and Untitled XIX (1984) among works of the preceding decades, the exhibition foregrounds visual motifs that recurred throughout de Kooning's career. De Kooning often reworked his canvases, reincorporating passages from earlier compositions by tracing shapes he wanted to preserve onto vellum, and even changing their orientation multiple times during their gestation. It was through revisiting and revising his compositions that he developed a consistent but flexible vocabulary of colors and gestures rooted in figuration. "A restless explorer of the canvas, de Kooning never stopped interrogating the possibilities of what painting could be," Alemani notes. "As a curator, it is deeply rewarding to grapple with the constant process of artistic reinvention and self-interrogation that animates his creative trajectory, especially through closer examination of his late works." The exhibition's title, Endless Painting, references this enduring, ever-evolving visual language and the artist's professed decision to "just stop" rather than formally finish paintings, perhaps seeking a more expansive definition of the medium itself. During the reception, Alemani will moderate a conversation exploring the continued impact of de Kooning's paintings and working methods on artists of today. Exhibition on view from April 15th through June 14th.

Gallery Talk | Conversation on Inspiration between Artist Chris Martin and Writer/Curator/Editor Raymond Foye

The discussion will focus on Martin's inspirations, and his process curating his exhibition, Love Poems, which features the work of Julian Schnabel, Marsden Hartley, Joyce Pensato, Peter Gallo, and many more! Regarding the exhibition, Martin says, "Many years ago I was alone in a house lost in thought looking down at a hay field in the Catskill mountains. I could see McCumber Farm, the distant Armstrong fields, and the steep silhouette of Dry Brook Ridge. An autumn breeze came in from the treetops, and as if in a dream - a man I knew appeared - slowly dragging a large wooden rowboat with a rope behind him through the tall grass. I recognized the old boat - now quite rotten - from my childhood. I watched transfixed as the bow cut through the dry grass, leaving a wake of flattened grass as it floated through the waving field. At that moment I loved that boat and loved the circling turkey buzzards. I loved the dry naples yellow of the grass. I loved that man and the hum of a distant chainsaw. I even loved my own loneliness. I hurried to help old John Asher drag that boat on its way to the burn pile at the bottom of the field."

Classical Music | Violin Duos by Bach and Bartok (in-person and online)

In this eclectic program, Duo Sapientia seeks to explore the resonances that emerge from duo violin music from three different periods, the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the Twentieth Century. The four composers featured -- Thomas Morley, Orlando Gibbons, J. S. Bach and Bela Bartok -- all share contrapuntal textures and fragmentary, conversational gestures. The interplay between modal music and traditional harmony in these pieces creates intriguing interactions for the listeners and players alike. Duo Sapientia was formed in the spring of 2024 during rehearsal breaks in a Buxtehude project. In true amateur style, Wolman introduced Ahn to Gibbons duos and discovered their mutual sensibilities over phrasing, gestures, and general musick-ing. Since then, they have been scheming to collaborate on various musical projects -- most notably, their current Bartok-focused endeavor, as well as one centered on Hildegard.

Theater | The Imaginary Invalid: Moliere's Comedy-Ballet Starring Broadway Actor

Argan is ill. But is he? Argan is dying. But aren't we all? Argan wants absolute control. But is that ever achievable? After a series of upside down attempts to snap him out of it, a solution is found. But will it save him? The Imaginary Invalid is the last play that legendary French playwright Moliere wrote and was originally conceived as a Comedy-Ballet where theater, dance, and music are intertwined. It explores the fear of disease and the exploitation it breeds through infinitely humorous dialogue and in-your-face satire. This production will feature original choreography by FlexN dancer Cal Hunt, original music by cellist Johnathan Moore, and stars Tony and Olivier Award nominee Sahr Ngaujah. Director and Translator: Lucie Tiberghien Choreographer and Dancer: Cal Hunt Composer and Cellist: Johnathan Moore Cast: Dante Bonner, Mary Bacon, Rory Furey-King, Doron JePaul, Naomi Lorrain, Sahr Ngaujah, Shayvawn Webster
