Lecture | The Limits of Urban Transformation in Maldova (In Person AND Online!)

This talk examines the concept of “ruralization” in Chișinău, the capital of the Republic of Moldova. By challenging conventional narratives of urbanization as a unilinear process, it argues that rural identities and practices persist and are reasserted within Chișinău’s urban spaces, blurring the urban-rural boundary. This hybridity, influenced by Moldova’s complex history under various imperial rules, is evident in vernacular architecture, subsistence practices, and a cultural valorization of the village as a core national identity marker. Speaker Abigail Karas argues that Chișinău’s “urban rurality” offers an alternative vision of urban life, resisting teleological models of modernity and fostering a unique socio-spatial landscape.

Opening Reception | Illustrative Play Exhibition: Immersive Stortelling Art

This reception celebrates the exhibition Act 1: Geraldine Scott III by Lillian Ansell. The work in this exhibition comprises the first act in an illustrated play, building the world and inviting the audience into its landscape of edible clouds, powerful trees, open fields, castles, and sinking swamps fit for a fairytale. Pointed loafers, puffy sleeves, glowing red eyes, tents, and long-limbed birds and insects begin to populate the world, constructing a social narrative. Starting with Overture to the Great Hatch, animated birds lay red spotted eggs. The story continues in a series of drawings where, protected by insects, the eggs hold a prophecy that becomes the object of desire for an evil king. The play explores good, evil, and the betwixt and between.

This reception centers around The Book Show, an exhibition of work by illustration as visual essay artists, curated by Anna Raff. The artists have created books in a format of their choice, whether it be illustrated poetry, memoir, social commentary, graphic novel, children’s book, or essay. Highlights from this year’s exhibition include Kailee Finn’s Taking Up Space, a design journal that reimagines the history of the Urban Renewal Movement and its impact on African American communities by transforming memory into wearable art. In Alison Staffin’s memoir comic Dr. Em, she enters a futuristic Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy pod and traces her day-to-day stress through her bodily memory back to her original trauma: being abandoned by her birth family in China as a newborn.

Talk | Experts Discuss International Relations 10 Years after the Charlie Hebdo Shooting (In Person AND Online!)

At a time when the West is grappling with Islamism and the Middle East is undergoing a major transformation, two prominent Middle East experts, Prof. Bernard Haykel of Princeton and Dr. Hugo Micheron from Sciences Po Paris will share their expertise on important geopolitical issues and security questions. Ten years ago, the terrorists who killed twelve members of the satirical newspaper Charle Hebdo and four customers at a kosher supermarket declared their allegiance to Al-Qaeda. The attackers were part of a global jihadist movement consisting of a network of extremist organizations advocating violent attacks against the West and Jews. How has this movement evolved since 2015? What is its relationship to more mainstream Islamist movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood? Has the strategy of Islamists shifted towards infiltrating Western countries through religious schools, mosques, activist imams, growing participation in elective positions and effective internet propaganda?

Screening | Jazz Legends in Cinema: Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, & Elvin Jones

Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Elvin Jones are well known figures in the jazz world, but they also graced cinema history in rarely screened short films, screened at this event. Each film captures a unique moment in the stylistic development of jazz and cinema throughout the 20th century. Ellington and his orchestra play lightly fictionalized versions of themselves in Black and Tan Fantasy (1929). The film is a dazzling depiction of the jazz club scene during the Harlem Renaissance. Dizzy Gillespie (1964) blends concert footage and direct interviews where the charismatic Gillespie discusses his philosophies on the trumpet and approach to composition in Les Blank's verite-style documentary. Finally, Different Drummer: Elvin Jones (1979), covers everything from Jones' childhood, his beginnings in jazz, his celebrated work with John Coltrane, to a breakdown of his drumming style.
