Film | All About Eve (1950): Classic Drama Film with Bette Davis & Marylin Monroe

An aspiring actress feigns humility and naivete to connive her way under the wing of a veteran Broadway star. She manipulates those in the star's circle in hopes of cheating her way to the top. Based on the short story "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr. Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz Cast: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Thelma Ritter, Marilyn Monroe Bette Davis was an American actress of film, television, and theater. She's considered one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history, often playing unsympathetic, sardonic characters, and her performances in a range of film genres, although her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas. Over the course of her career, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, was the first person to accrue ten Academy Award nominations (and one write-in) for acting, and was the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. In 1999, Davis was placed second on the American Film Institute's list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Marilyn Monroe was an American actress and model, often considered the face of the face of Hollywood's Golden Age. She was often cast as comic "blonde bombshell" character roles. During her lifetime, her films grossed $200 million (~$2 billion in 2025). She won many awards, including a Golden Globe, and received even more nominations.

Throughout World War II, she was a high-profile entertainer in the United States. Although she delivered notable performances in several post-war films, she spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a marquee live-show performer. A well-known figure of Classic Hollywood, Cary Grant was nominated twice for the Academy Award, received an Academy Honorary Award, and received the Kennedy Center Honors. In 1999, Grant was named the second greatest male star of the Golden Age of Hollywood by the American Film Institute.

Performance | The Love Suicide of Amijima: Modernized Japanese Bunraku Love Story (with Shadow Puppetry, Opera, Original Music, & More)

The Love Suicide at Amijima is a traditional Japanese Bunraku tale written in 1770s. It is a tragic forbidden love story between two people divided by moral rights and social hierarchy. This is not just a Japanese classical tale. It is a story about people. It is a tale about how humans are beautiful and ugly at the same time, that is the beauty of life. In this version, the classical tale will be told using the traditional methods and modern techniques. We believe that while respecting and preserving a historical depth of traditionalism, we can also still have fun, explore, and adapt with respect. Using shadow puppetry, opera, original composed music, and dances, there is unlimited fun you can have exploring these pieces. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Translated by Tomoka Takahashi.

Performance | Fragmented Hope: Feminist Drama

In the near future, the world is governed by authoritarian regimes that claim ownership over women’s bodies. Children are raised by the nation, not by families, and women who refuse motherhood are sent to a remote training camp for correction. When a new group of women arrives and meets the women already in the camp, each carrying different languages, histories, and wounds, they quickly learn there is no way out. Their bodies are claimed by the nation, but their hope refuses to be erased. This is where the story begins. Written by Jing Wang.

Opera | The Silent Serenade (Die Stumme Serenade): Erich Korngold's Romantic Farce

Mannes Opera presents the U.S. Premiere of The Silent Serenade (Die Stumme Serenade), by composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold and librettist Victor Clement. Written in the late 1940s after Korngold’s celebrated Hollywood tenure, and based on a short story by Austrian writer Raoul Auernheimer, The Silent Serenade is a romantic farce brimming with mistaken identities, amorous intrigue, and glittering melodies. The operetta-revue hybrid was intended for Broadway, at a time when works like Regina, The Consul, and Trouble in Tahiti found success on theatrical stages. But after a troubled production history—including an aborted Shubert Brothers run—the piece slipped into obscurity. Now, in a long-overdue U.S. premiere presented in English, Mannes Opera brings back this sophisticated confection, illuminating a facet of Korngold’s genius rarely seen by American audiences. Conductor: Cris Frisco Director: Emma Griffin Featuring Mannes Orchestra.

Play | The Strange Disappearance of Cat Braun and Minnie Roy: Dark Comedy

On the night of their five-year anniversary broadcast, news anchors Cat Braun and Minnie Roy are interrupted mid-live broadcast and find themselves trapped inside their own studio. Torn between what they can and can't (or shouldn't) say, this play is a dark comedy following two journalists that spiral out of reality while trying to make sense of it.
