Galleries | Partake in a Conceptual Art Project on the Spatialization of Time

Conceptualized in 1970 as a contribution for a seminar at Les Arcs in the French Alps, David Lamelas’s Time articulates time visible at multiple levels: in a site, as information, and as an activity. In this work, time becomes both spatialized and durational through the performance of “passing" time down a line of participants. The first person states the current time to the next person, who waits one minute before passing it along again. This sequence continues down the line until it reaches the final participant, who then announces the time in any language they choose. A print of the first iteration of Time, as well as a video of the 2020 virtual iteration are on view.

Opening Reception | El amor se esconde como un animal salvaje: Solo Painting Exhibition on Connection in a Fragmented World

El amor se esconde como un animal salvaje, Daniel Correa Mejia's solo exhibition, showcases a new body of paintings that portray scenes of care, intimacy, and love set against vast landscapes. This presentation furthers the artist's unique visual style, expanding upon his signature biochromatic palette of red and ultramarine to include the gamut of tones and their spiritual connotations. Whether depicting humans or animals, Correa Mejia's compositions evince a desire to find connection and sense of self not through tribalism, but through the radical act of shared vulnerability. The title of the exhibition, which translates to Love hides like a wild animal, underscores the sensitivity present in each work. Like a wild animal, love retreats at any sign of threat; the desire to capture, classify, or control love ultimately renders it invisible. To open oneself up to another -- and consequently accept the risk of being hurt -- is an essential act that nonetheless requires immense courage. The artist presents scenes of deep tenderness and affection while simultaneously withholding narrative transparency: Are these bonds familial, communal, societal, romantic? Rather than provide resolution, Correa Mejia's paintings offer these questions to encourage an openness to all forms of connection in an increasingly fragmented world, a notion reflexively furthered by the very act of exhibition, in which the artist sensitively presents his own feelings and practice for an unknown audience.

Opening Reception | Strip: Group Exhibition Exploring the Body As an Artistic Medium

Experience Strip, a group exhibition bringing together three major works by the groundbreaking artists Jimmy DeSana, Carolee Schneemann, and Martha Wilson. DeSana, Schneemann, and Wilson combine performance with seriality, text, and photo to establish the body as a medium within conceptual art. Created between 1972-1973 in the context of a male-dominated conceptual art movement and a cultural backdrop of conservative backlash against the recent civil rights, feminist, and gay liberation movements, these performance-driven works undermined societal taboos and restrictions surrounding sexuality and gender within the art world and beyond. DeSana, Schneemann, and Wilson’s campy, provocative, and collaborative works claimed their autonomous subjectivity within spaces that were not accustomed to such commanding presence. By dressing up and dressing down, the artists in Strip simultaneously undressed the assumed systems of authority, transforming them into sites of radical liberation.

Book Discussion | Award Winning Authors Discuss Contemporary Art Book, Mothers of Invention

Enjoy a panel discussion with the authors of Mothers of Invention, followed by a reception celebrating the opening of the exhibition. In this landmark book, Eleanor Heartney, Helaine Posner, Nancy Princenthal, and Sue Scott offer a radical rethinking of contemporary art through a feminist lens. Tracing the lineages of performance, abstraction, craft, and ecofeminism, they reveal the profound influence of pioneering women artists on practices that define the field today. Together, the authors will reflect on the ideas at the heart of the book and exhibition, exploring how feminist artists challenged dominant narratives and helped shape a more expansive, inclusive, and socially engaged art world.

Talk | Curator-Led Journey through the Diverse Treasures and Unique Heritage of Nubian Art

This lecture will present an overview of 6,000 years of objects from Nubia’s diverse cultures and empires. It will attempt to define the characteristics of Nubian art, emphasizing how it differs from Egyptian art to which it is often — but incorrectly — unfavorably compared. Dr. Rita Freed, curator emerita at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, explores Nubia’s artistic richness. Nubia, the land of the Nile Cataracts, produced art that speaks to the creativity of its artists, architects, crafts people, and thinkers. Yet until recently, its material culture has not received the attention it deserves. Presented in collaboration with the American Research Center in Egypt’s National and New York Chapter, Dr. Freed focuses upon the diverse treasures and unique heritage of this land encompassing southern Egypt and northern Sudan.

Concert | 100 Electric Guitars Play at Once: Avant-Garde, Maximalist Symphony

Hear a live performance of the late composer Glenn Branca's Symphony No. 13, aka Hallucination City, which premiered in June of 2001 and was one of the last works of art to take place at World Trade Center Plaza. Written in four movements for an orchestra of 100 electric guitar players and intended to be played uninterrupted in just over an hour, the work has become a landmark of avant-garde music, notorious for its maximalism, eccentric tuning, and overwhelming intensity. Branca, a prolifically eclectic creative mind with roots in the no wave rock scene, built a symphony so legendarily iconoclastic that it became synonymous with the furthest extremes of sound. Due to the project's challenging orchestration and significant complexity, Hallucination City has never had a full revival in New York City... until now. Don't miss this one-night-only opportunity, conducted by Reg Bloor, to experience a musical megalith revived in the city of its birth. Pay-what-you-wish tickets go on sale on May 20 at noon.
