Book Discussion | Elemental: How Five Elements Changed Earth's Past and Will Shape Our Future (in-person and online)

It is rare for life to change Earth, yet three organisms have profoundly transformed our planet over the long course of its history. Elemental reveals how microbes, plants, and people used the fundamental building blocks of life to alter the climate, and with it, the trajectory of life on Earth in the past, present, and future. Taking readers from the deep geologic past to our current era of human dominance, Stephen Porder focuses on five of life’s essential elements—hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. He describes how single-celled cyanobacteria and plants harnessed them to wildly proliferate across the oceans and the land, only to eventually precipitate environmental catastrophes. He then brings us to the present, and shows how these elements underpin the success of human civilization, and how their mismanagement threatens similarly catastrophic unintended consequences. But, Porder argues, if we can learn from our world-changing predecessors, we can construct a more sustainable future. Blending conversational storytelling with the latest science, Porder takes us deep into the Amazon, across fresh lava flows in Hawaii, and to the cornfields of the American Midwest to illuminate a potential path to sustainability, informed by the constraints imposed by life’s essential elements and the four-billion-year history of life on Earth.

Gallery Talk | Divide Two Divide One: Artist Talk on Natural and Spiritual Influences

Korean Artist Kim Yun Shin in conversation with curator Christopher Y. Lew before the opening reception of Kim's first major solo show in New York, Divide Two Divide One. Named for Kim's iconic sculptural series Add Two Add One Divide Two Divide One, the title derives from the philosophical concept of yin (division and fragmentation) and yang (addition and integration), which informs Kim's process--she "adds" her soul into the solid wood and "divides" the space between the bark and inner wood to create a complete whole. Both exhibitions will probe the scope of Kim's historic career, tracing her artistic and thematic development, and thus, her connection to the natural and spiritual worlds around her. Lew is a New York-based curator and writer.

Opening Reception | 2 Exhibitions: The Paradox of Things / Stop Motion

Libbet Loughnan Stop Motion The pieces on display range in subject matter from deeply personal self-portraits to abstract playful and meditative pieces. Libbet Loughnan is a multi-award winning artist who has resided for many years in NYC, enjoys substantial time in Mexico, and is originally from Australia. The artist's paintings and sculptures reflect a childhood rich in family warmth under the Australian sun, stories encountered across countries in adult life, and a desire for more reflection on the place of humans within nature.  Yu Rong The Paradox of Things – An Exhibition Exploring the Duality of Human Nature  A solo exhibition by multi-media artist Yu Rong. Through a collection of collages, drawings, paintings, and mixed media works, the exhibition explores the inherent contradictions of human nature—desire and suffering, chaos and serenity, the seen and the unseen. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Deformed: A Collage of Desire and Suffering, a series that examines emotional distortion and longing. The fragmented imagery and layered compositions invite viewers to question the gap between appearance and reality, suggesting that what we see is not always the whole truth. In this series, Yu Rong reflects on how outward images—such as those presented on social media—may conceal deeper emotional states, such as loneliness or abandonment.

Opening Reception | George Woodman: A Democracy of Parts: Paintings 1966 - 1978

Focusing on geometric abstractions from a significant period within the artist’s six-decade career, the exhibition traces the development of Woodman’s singular approach to pattern. This exhibition marks the first time the artist’s paintings from this period have been shown in New York since the 1980s. In the 1960s, George Woodman began working with systematic pattern compositions, influenced by Minimalism as well as art and architecture studied during his travels to countries including Italy, Morocco, and Spain–– a visit to study tiles at the Alhambra in 1965 proved to be pivotal. By the mid-1960s, Woodman’s intellectually rigorous approach to pattern developed into tessellations––repeating, rotating, and reflecting shapes which fit together seamlessly to cover a canvas. Woodman saw these compositions as fundamentally anti-hierarchical, writing in 1978: In contrast to looser types of pattern, tessellations suppress figure-ground relationships thus emphasizing part to part continuity in favor of part to whole relationships. In this democracy of parts "composition" is sidestepped since the elements have no hierarchical relationship to each other, or a field, beyond their common participation in some combinatorial system which is in principle boundless in extension.

Opening Reception | Helena Foster: Time Honoured

The first New York solo exhibition of London-based painter Helena Foster, features new oil paintings on linen, paper, and vellum that express Foster’s lyrical approach to painting as an accumulation of cultural and generational wisdom. Foster draws freely from literature, theater, film, Igbo oral tradition, and religion, achieving a dreamlike aura of mystery in dynamic compositions ambiguously set between thick vegetation and the built environment. Often populated by figures, whether isolated in anticipation of a gathering or in groups who huddle, recline, and walk in procession, these scenes cohere into a visual universe distinguished by its earthen palette and deft rendering of light. Exploring themes of community, memory, and prophecy, Foster’s paintings offer visual proverbs for the contemporary age.

Book Discussion | Realistic Fiction: Startingly Unique Stories

Author Anton Solomonik in conversation with Cat Fitzpatrick. Finally, a book for men.  Have you ever engaged in totally normal male behavior like: Stealing porn magazines? Hooking up with guys on Grindr? Attempting to work in an open-pit mine despite having no relevant job experience? Crossdressing as a woman? Attending Gnostic Mass? Running for government office? Then this is a book for you! It is definitely not a deeply felt collection of transsexual short stories, engaged in dissident metaphysical investigation of the normative tenets of gender in our society. Bro, how could you say that? It is very dramatic and exciting, yes, but it is not metaphysical at all. In fact, it is Realistic Fiction.  As if Charlie Chaplin re-wrote the works of Kafka, and he was a Russian trans man, Anton Solomonik brings a funny, heartbreaking, and startlingly unique new voice to contemporary short fiction.

Discussion | Yiddish Studies in the Digital Age: 10 Years of In geveb (in-person and online)

In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies published its first articles, essays, translations, and teacher resources in August of 2015. In the intervening decade, it has to a large degree achieved its founding goal, to become “a central address for the study of all things Yiddish.” A generation of students, culture producers, and emerging scholars of Yiddish have now come of age with In geveb as a place to publish, to keep abreast of current research around the world, to find new translations to teach, and read reviews of everything from the latest scholarly publications to new Yiddish music, theater, and film. This roundtable brings together a group of scholars who have all been involved with In geveb in a range of roles to reflect on what this “born digital” journal has contributed to the field of Yiddish studies. This panel will also reflect on the state of Yiddish studies more broadly over the past decade. The panel will conclude by asking what the next 10 years will hold for the field of Yiddish studies, and how scholarly and cultural spaces like In geveb will need to adapt to be ready to serve a changing academic and cultural landscape. Panelists include former Peer Review Associate for In geveb Elena Hoffenberg, founding co-editor of In geveb and past president of In geveb’s board of directors Eitan Kensky, and members of In geveb’s board of directors Eddy Portnoy and Rachel Rubinstein. The evening will be introduced and moderated by chief editor of In geveb Jessica Kirzane and president of In geveb’s board of directors Madeleine Cohen.
