Lecture | Fred Kormis (1894-1986): Sculpting the Twentieth Century (online)

Curator Dr Barbara Warnock will trace the life and career of German/ Austrian Jewish emigre sculptor and printmaker Fred (Fritz) Kormis (1894-1986), and examine the ways in the which the major historical events that Kormis lived through affected his work. Born in 1894 in Frankfurt into an Austrian and German Jewish family, Fred Kormis' life and career were shaped and disrupted by some of the most significant events of the twentieth century. Kormis saw action and was wounded in the First World War as part of the Austrian army, before being held for four years as a prisoner of war in Siberia. He worked as an artist during the politically and culturally tumultuous Weimar period, and during the Nazi era revealed himself to be Jewish, a decision that led to the removal of his art from galleries. Kormis and his wife Rachel Sender left Germany in 1933, and many of the works he left behind in Germany were lost. In exile in relative poverty in Britain from 1934, Kormis formed deep links with many in the Jewish refugee community in London.

Book Club | Poetry Discussion: Requiem by Anna Akhmatova

Anna Andreyevna Gorenko (1889-1966), better known by the pen name Anna Akhmatova, was a Russian poet, one of the most significant of the 20th century. She reappeared as a voice of Russian poetry during World War II. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965 and 1966. Akhmatova's work ranges from short lyric poems to intricately structured cycles, such as Requiem (1935–40), her tragic masterpiece about the Stalinist terror. Her style, characterized by its economy and emotional restraint, was strikingly original and distinctive to her contemporaries. The strong and clear leading female voice struck a new chord in Russian poetry. Her writing can be said to fall into two periods – the early work (1912–25) and her later work (from around 1936 until her death), divided by a decade of reduced literary output. Her work was condemned and censored by Stalinist authorities, and she is notable for choosing not to emigrate and remaining in the Soviet Union, acting as witness to the events around her. Her perennial themes include meditations on time and memory, and the difficulties of living and writing in the shadow of Stalinism. Primary sources of information about Akhmatova's life are relatively scant, as war, revolution and the Soviet regime caused much of the written record to be destroyed. For long periods she was in official disfavor and many of those who were close to her died in the aftermath of the revolution. Akhmatova's first husband, Nikolay Gumilyov, was executed by the Soviet secret police, and her son Lev Gumilyov and her common-law husband Nikolay Punin spent many years in the Gulag, where Punin died.

Book Discussion | Playworld: 14-Year-Old's Affair with a Married Woman

Griffin Hurt is in over his head. Between his role as Peter Proton on the hit TV show The Nuclear Family and the pressure of high school at New York's elite Boyd Prep—along with the increasingly compromising demands of his wrestling coach—he's teetering on the edge of collapse.  Then comes Naomi Shah, twenty-two years Griffin’s senior. Unwilling to lay his burdens on his shrink—whom he shares with his father, mother, and younger brother, Oren—Griffin soon finds himself in the back of Naomi’s Mercedes sedan, again and again, confessing all to the one person who might do him the most harm. Less a bildungsroman than a story of miseducation, Playworld is a novel of epic proportions, bursting with laughter and heartache. Author Adam Ross immerses us in the life of Griffin and his loving (yet disintegrating) family while seeming to evoke the entirety of Manhattan and the ethos of an era—with Jimmy Carter on his way out and a B-list celebrity named Ronald Reagan on his way in. Surrounded by adults who embody the age’s excesses—and who seem to care little about what their children are up to—Griffin is left to himself to find the line between youth and maturity, dependence and love, acting and truly grappling with life.

Book Discussion | The Incorruptibles: A True Story of Kingpins, Crime Busters, and the Birth of the American Underworld by Dan Slater

Join The Incorruptibles author Dan Slater as he presents this harrowing tale of early twentieth century New York, revealing the true story of an immigrant underworld, a secret vice squad, and the rise of organized crime. In the early 1900s, prior to World War I, New York City was a vortex of vice and corruption. On the Lower East Side, then the most crowded ghetto on earth, Eastern European Jews formed a dense web of crime syndicates. Gangs of horse poisoners and casino owners, pimps and prostitutes, thieves and thugs, jockeyed for dominance while their family members and neighbors toiled in the unregulated garment industry. But when the notorious murder of a gambler attracted global attention, a coterie of affluent German-Jewish uptowners decided to take matters into their own hands. Worried about the anti-immigration lobby and the uncertain future of Jewish Americans, the uptowners marshaled a strictly off-the-books vice squad led by an ambitious young reformer.  The squad, known as the Incorruptibles, took the fight to the heart of crime in the city, waging war on the sin they saw as threatening the future of their community. Their efforts, however, led to unforeseen consequences in the form of a new mobster class who realized, in the country’s burgeoning reform efforts, unprecedented opportunities to amass power.

Dance Performance | 2025 Out-FRONT! Festival: New Dance

Out-FRONT! Fest is a new dance, performance art, and film festival championing the voices of LGBTQ and Feminist artists for a lively exchange of art and culture. The Out-FRONT! Festival 2025 is curated by Gian Marco Riccardo Lo Forte, Philip Treviño, and Daniel Diaz; producer Remi Harris, and cultural organizer Joyce Isabelle. The Festival features award-winning artists who enlighten, entertain and promote conversations around aesthetic diversity and personal journeys on the intersection of mutual ideas, cultures, and meanings. jill sigman/thinkdance: Re-Seeding (Encounter #4: The Seamstress) Re-Seeding is an iterative performance process that explores our interconnectedness to land and each other. In this new iteration, Encounter #4: The Seamstress, Sigman brings her own lineage as a non-Indigenous person with a history of Jewish grief, immigrant displacement, and trauma to the land that is now called Washington Square—once the homeland of the Lenape people, the site of a disappeared underground creek, part of a free Black farming community, a military parade ground, and a mass grave in which some 20,000 people are buried. In a performance landscape of mulberry and cherry tree stumps, Sigman casts family artifacts and clay body parts in a divining ritual of self-understanding, memorializing her recently deceased father, and acknowledging the painful history of this occupied land. The piece is a solo dance in which Jill is joined by three live musicians, Miguel Frasconi on glass instruments, Gustavo Aguilar on percussion, and Kristin Norderval on voice and electronics, and theater/spoken word artist Vida Landrón (African, Powhatan, Taino).
