Book Club | Discuss John Steinbeck's Cannery Row

Discuss Cannery Row by John Steinbeck with a group of like-minded readers! Book Description: "Cannery Row is a book without much of a plot. Rather, it is an attempt to capture the feeling and people of a place, the cannery district of Monterey, California, which is populated by a mix of those down on their luck and those who choose for other reasons not to live "up the hill" in the more respectable area of town. The flow of the main plot is frequently interrupted by short vignettes that introduce us to various denizens of the Row, most of whom are not directly connected with the central story. These vignettes are often characterized by direct or indirect reference to extreme violence: suicides, corpses, and the cruelty of the natural world.

Screening | A.P. Giannini: Bank to the Future (2024)--Documentary on Financial Revolutionary (+ Exhibit Opening)

This film retraces the life and legacy of Amadeo Peter Giannini (1870-1949), the son of Italian immigrants who founded the Bank of Italy--later to become Bank of America. At a time when American banks served primarily the wealthy, Giannini introduced a radically different idea: banking built on trust in ordinary people. Giannini also opened the doors of credit to immigrants, farmers, and entrepreneurs who had long been excluded from traditional banking. His institution would go on to support emerging industries--including the young Walt Disney, whose creative ambitions found backing when more cautious financiers hesitated. Directors: Valentina Signorelli, Cecilia Zoppelletto In English with Italian and English subtitles. Followed by the opening of the exhibition "You Can't Die for a Dollar": The Revolution of Amadeo Peter Giannini.

Lecture | Learn about Immigration Rights

Learn about the movement for immigrant rights, which faces unprecedented challenges. Immigrant communities are strong and resilient, yet face a vast deportation machinery that constantly threatens the lives they have built in the United States. When the law is so often used as a tool of oppression, how can it be used as a tool for liberation? What role can lawyers play in supporting movements that seek to protect and advance immigrant rights? Professor Alina Das, Director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic at NYU Law School, will address these issues and share examples from her clinic’s advocacy on behalf of its clients and community partners. She will discuss the power and limitations of lawyering, and the importance of solidarity across movements and disciplines to achieve justice.

Lin's introductory remarks explore the founding of the Chopin Competition in 1927 and its storied history of launching some of the most renowned pianists of our time. Director: Jakub Piatek

Book Discussion | Environmental law Scholar Shares Her New Book, Governing Forests: State, Law and Citizenship in India’s Forests

In this talk, Professor Arpitha Kodiveri (Vassar College) will discuss the central arguments of her recent book, Governing Forests: State, Law, and Citizenship in India’s Forests, which examines how law, governance, and political struggle shape forest landscapes in contemporary India. Based on field research in India, and in collaboration with forest-dwelling communities, Professor Kodiveri explores how Indigenous and marginalized groups engage strategically with legal systems to fight against dispossession, negotiate rights, and redefine forms of political participation in forest regions. This conversation creates a space for discussion of alternative futures beyond the colonial gaze and the Anthropocene, by analyzing environmental law, its limits, and possible uses as a tool for resistance.

Screening | After the Rain (2021): Chinese Documentary on 2008 Sichuan Earthquake (+ Filmmaker Q&A)

After an earthquake razed a Chinese city to the ground in 2008, over 6,000 parents are encouraged to replace the children they lost and move on. Due to the One-Child Policy, most of these parents lost the only children they had. After the Rain follows the two couples who become close friends through the shared experience of introducing new children into their shaken families. In 2017, parents Mei and Sheng live with their 6 year-old son Chuan, and a framed photo of their deceased little girl. Their friends Ying and Ping are raising their 11 year-old daughter Ran-ran, after Ying and Ping lost their first daughter. The parents' search for the strength to raise these second children becomes complicated as Chuan and Ran-ran grow older and wiser. Haunted by fear, resentment, and unspeakable grief, the families find hope beyond intergenerational trauma to build towards an uncertain tomorrow.
