Film | October H8TE (2024): The New Iteration of the Oldest Hatred, with Debra Messing

The documentary looks at the emergence of anti-Semitism on college campuses, in social media and on the streets since October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel. Almost immediately after the Hamas massacre of October 7, the world pivoted into a dystopian nightmare with the narrative rewritten, turning murderers into freedom fighters and victims into aggressors. Ivy League presidents refused to condemn calls for the genocide of Jews as violations of their campuses' codes of conduct. The sexual assault and rape of Israeli women was ignored, dismissed, even denied. And a tsunami of online antisemitism followed. How did we get to this moment, when "Hamas in America" became not a right-wing talking point but a reality manifesting itself from Cambridge to Los Angeles? The new documentary film October H8TE seeks to answer that question by examining intersectionality, why social justice activists align themselves with reactionary organizations, the influence of funding and messaging linked to Hamas and the "curious" amount of antisemitic content flooding social media linked to Iranian, Russian and Chinese IP addresses. The film's message is simple: Jewish or not, you need to care about this latest wave of antisemitism because Jews and Israel aren't its only targets: The mobs shouting "Globalize the Intifada" are, ultimately, attacking truth, democracy and a free society. The film includes interviews with Debra Messing, Michael Rapaport, Mosab Yousef (son of Hamas's cofounder), Sheryl Sandberg, US Representative Ritchie Torres, US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, US Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, Dan Senor, Noa Tishby, Bari Weiss and Douglas Murray. After the screening, we will be joined for a discussion with its director, Wendy Sachs, and Debra Messing, the film's executive producer.

Film | At Dark, I Become Loathsome by Eric LaRocca

From Eric LaRocca—Bram Stoker Award–nominated and Splatterpunk Award–winning author of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke—comes At Dark, I Become Loathsome, a grim yet gentle, horrifying yet hopeful, intense tale of death, trauma, and love. “If you’re reading this, you’ve likely thought that the world would be a better place without you”: A single line of text, glowing in the darkness of the internet. Written by Ashley Lutin, who has often thought the same—and worse—in the years since his wife died and his young son disappeared. But the peace of the grave is not for him—it’s for those he can help. Ashley has constructed a peculiar ritual for those whose desire to die is at war with their yearning to live a better life. Struggling to overcome his own endless grief, one night Ashley finds connection with Jinx—a potential candidate for Ashley’s next ritual—who spins a tale both revolting and fascinating. Thus begins a relationship that traps the two men in an ever-tightening spiral of painful revelations, where long-hidden secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light. At this event, author Eric LaRocca will discuss their new book and more with fellow author Chuck Wendig.

Film | The City Without Jews (1924): Silent Masterpiece with Live Musical Accompaniment

H. K. Breslauer’s 1924 silent masterpiece is based on the bestselling dystopian novel by Hugo Bettauer. It was produced two years after the book’s publication and, tragically, shortly before the satirical events depicted in the fictional story transformed into all-too-horrific reality. All complete prints were thought to be destroyed, but thanks to the discovery of a nitrate print in a Parisian flea market in 2015, this “lost” film can once again be appreciated in its unfortunately ever-relevant entirety. Set in the Austrian city of Utopia (a thinly-disguised stand-in for Vienna), the story follows the political and personal consequences of an antisemitic law passed by the National Assembly forcing all Jews to leave the country. At first, the decision is met with celebration, but when the citizens of Utopia eventually come to terms with the loss of the Jewish population – and the resulting economic and cultural decline—the National Assembly must decide whether to invite the Jews back. Though darkly comedic in tone and stylistically influenced by German Expressionism, the film nonetheless contains ominous and eerily realistic sequences, such as shots of freight trains transporting Jews out of the city. The film’s stinging critique of Nazism is part of the reason it was no longer screened in public after 1933. The screening will be accompanied by live original music composed and performed by world-renowned klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and celebrated silent film pianist Donald Sosin. A Q&A session with the musicians will follow the cine-concert.

Screening | 140 Years of Composer Alban Berg: Screening and Discussion

Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the birth of Austrian composer Alban Berg and come for a film-screening of Secret Song. 2025 marks the 140th anniversary of the birth of Alban Berg (1885-1935), a key figure in 20th-century music and a leading member of the Second Viennese School, founded by Arnold Schoenberg. Known for his groundbreaking work in blending atonality and serialism with a rich, emotional expressiveness, Berg's compositions continue to resonate with modern audiences. His operas Wozzeck and Lulu stand as masterpieces of modernist opera, while his Violin Concerto is celebrated for its poignant lyrical beauty. Secret Song tells the gripping true story behind a musical masterpiece: Alban Berg's Lyric Suite for string quartet has long been hailed as one of the cornerstones of 20th-century musical modernism. But for decades, few suspected that behind this powerful music lies an explosive secret. In 1925, Berg fell passionately in love with Hanna Fuchs-Robettin, a married woman living in Prague. Soon afterwards, Berg composed the Lyric Suite for string quartet, which he intended as an explicit musical portrayal of his love affair with Hanna. Berg explained the music's secret meaning in a color-coded copy of the score that he annotated for Hanna, making clear that the main events of their romance are vividly dramatized in the piece. But to the rest of the world -- including his wife, Helene -- Berg presented the piece as he wanted it to be seen: a purely abstract work of chamber music. Among the work's secrets is that its last movement was originally conceived as a song about doomed love, set to a poem by Baudelaire. Secret Song brings this tale to life as an innovative film narrative. At the heart of the film is a cinematic re-enactment of the love story hidden within the notes of the music, with the music itself as the soundtrack.
