Film | Filmmakers for the Prosecution (2021): Uncovering the Truth for the Nuremberg Trial

Filmmakers for the Prosecution revisits the quest for film evidence that could hold the Nazis accountable at the Nuremberg Trial. The search was led by two American soldiers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg, under the direction of OSS film chief John Ford. The footage they presented in court became part of the official record and continues to shape our understanding of the Holocaust today. Seventy-five years later, French journalist and filmmaker Jean-Christophe Klotz returns to the German salt mines where films were destroyed, uncovers previously unseen footage, and interviews key figures to reveal why the resulting film about the trial--Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today by Stuart Schulberg--was deliberately suppressed by the U.S. Department of War. Klotz's compelling documentary also explores how these pioneering materials were obtained and raises important questions about documentarians' responsibilities to future generations. For ages 18+; contains graphic footage and imagery that may be upsetting to some viewers. Run time: 59 minutes

Screening | Joseph Brodsky: Epitaph for a Centaur, Six Years Later: Short Film and Discussion

A panel discussion and screening of a short film examining the life of Joseph Brodsky, the celebrated Russian-Jewish American writer and Nobel Laureate. Through analyses of two of Brodsky's evocative poems, “Epitaph for a Centaur” and “Six Years Later,” this 25-minute film encapsulates Brodsky's exploration of identity, belonging, and the passage of time. The film examines the paradoxical relationship between the U.S. and Russia during the Cold War, intricately portrayed through the symbolic figure of the centaur—a representation of Brodsky’s own multi-faceted existence as Russian, American, and Jewish. By delving into the intricate language of Brodsky’s poetry, this short film explores Brodsky’s Jewish identity, his legacy, and the political undertones of his writing.

Film | Knit's Island (2023): documentary

Shot entirely in a virtual environment, Knit’s Island is a contemplative documentary that attempts to discover what is “real” in this virtual existence. Under the guise of avatars, a film crew enters a space and makes contact with the "locals." This mysterious, post-apocalyptic rural landscape is revealed as a meeting place, where stories, ideas, and friendships are shared. Slowly the players drop their masks to reveal their realities, their daily lives, their relationships of love and friendship. Mixing their memories of the game with the stories of their real lives, a group will take viewers on a walk on the borders of the Internet. By going to the edge of the game, in search of the limits of this place, the film explores the first steps of the virtualization of our lives, and questions the future of our world.

Screening | Kidnapped: The Hostage Poster Wars: Screening and Discussion

On October 7, Dede Bandaid and Nitzan Mintz, Israeli artists in New York City for a residency program, never imagined they would spark a guerrilla public art war. Overwhelmed by the news from home about the mounting number of dead and kidnapped, they just wanted to channel their anguish into throwing a spotlight on the plight of the hostages. With the help of two graphic designers back home, they created "KIDNAPPED" posters with the images, names and ages of the hostages and began plastering them across the city, even asking random people to put them up in their neighborhoods. Suddenly, the posters were everywhere: on lamp posts, subway entrances, abandoned buildings. Just as suddenly, they were torn down, shredded or defaced, the word "KIDNAPPED" on one poster bearing the image of an 8-year-old girl replaced by the word "OCCUPIER." The posters are anti-Islamic propaganda, the defilers insisted. Pro-war agitprop. The new documentary film Torn delves into this proxy for a war thousands of miles away--the intense clashes between pro-Israel and pro-Palestine activists who turned New York City's streets into battlegrounds of ideology and emotion. This is a screening of the film and then a conversation with: -- Nitzan Mintz and Dede Bandaid, Street artists and KIDNAPPED Campaign designers -- Nina Mogilnik, Writer, Torn -- Nim Shapira, Writer, Director, Producer, Torn -- Alana Zeitchik, Hostage family member, Executive Director, The Narrow Bridge Project -- Moderated by Yuna Leibzon, US correspondent for Channel 12 News Israel.

Film | At Dark, I Become Loathsome by Eric LaRocca

From Eric LaRocca—Bram Stoker Award–nominated and Splatterpunk Award–winning author of Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke—comes At Dark, I Become Loathsome, a grim yet gentle, horrifying yet hopeful, intense tale of death, trauma, and love. “If you’re reading this, you’ve likely thought that the world would be a better place without you”: A single line of text, glowing in the darkness of the internet. Written by Ashley Lutin, who has often thought the same—and worse—in the years since his wife died and his young son disappeared. But the peace of the grave is not for him—it’s for those he can help. Ashley has constructed a peculiar ritual for those whose desire to die is at war with their yearning to live a better life. Struggling to overcome his own endless grief, one night Ashley finds connection with Jinx—a potential candidate for Ashley’s next ritual—who spins a tale both revolting and fascinating. Thus begins a relationship that traps the two men in an ever-tightening spiral of painful revelations, where long-hidden secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light. At this event, author Eric LaRocca will discuss their new book and more with fellow author Chuck Wendig.
