Screening | Artifact War (2024) Documentary + Panel Discussion with Experts

The documentary Artifact War (2024) is an enlightening and masterful cinematic story on the smuggling of cultural property out of Syria by ISIS (ISIS/IS-Da'esh). An intrepid archeology professor and his team of students are the only ones who stand in the way of an ISIS illicit antiquities network. Faced with losing their cultural heritage they become spies, and they go undercover in ISIS territory. They dodge bombs and militia to create a system to monitor theft and destruction of Syrian antiquities. During this process, they discover more than they anticipated, discovering thousands of trafficked items and that the crimes committed are being enabled by terrorists and multinational corporations. The tragedy continues because the sale of illegal goods is uncovered in the most unsuspecting place. Directed by Evan Carpenter & Jacob Schwarz. THe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the film's subject and experts in the international relations field.

Screening | Ecuadorian LGBTQ+ Film Fest: Short & Mid-Length Works

This festival aims to recognize the accomplishments of Ecuadorian queer filmmaking by featuring a line-up of short and medium-length films covering variety of genres such as documentary, narrative and experimental films. As in much of Latin America, queer visibility in cinema in Ecuador was mostly negligible during the 20th century. As the new century rolled in, a small but growing number of Ecuadorian filmmakers began weaving in stories where queer characters were the main focus. Often self-financed on micro-budgets under the sphere of stigma, the emergence of queer cinema in Ecuador became a transgressive cry for visibility as much as an artistic expression.

Screening | Leila and the Wolves (1984): Levantine Hybrid Cinematic Essay (+ Discussion)

"This film is based on actual events which are part of the collective memory of the Lebanese and Palestinian people." So begins Leila and the Wolves, Lebanese filmmaker Heiny Srour's only narrative feature--a bold, lyrical homage to the often-erased legacy of Arab women in the liberation struggle. At its center is Leila, a Lebanese woman living in London, who uncovers the overlooked contributions of women--fighters, nurturers, strategists--to the broader revolutionary movement. Drawing on the Arab heritage of oral tradition and mosaic pattern, Leila and the Wolves blends reenactment, archival footage, folklore in a visually and narratively hybrid cinematic essay and feminist counter narrative. It was banned in the Arab World for 45 years--and still is in many Arab countries. The film has been rarely shown and was restored in 2024. Director: Heiny Srour In Arabic with English subtitles. Screening followed by a Q&A with the director Heiny Srour and Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Columbia Madeleine Dobie.

Screening | Artists & Filmmakers Explore Love, Place, Memory, & Possibility

Bonding Humanity: Assemblies in Motion is a curated screening program bringing together artists and filmmakers who explore the fragile and shifting ties that shape how we live together -- in public and private, in memory and in movement. Inspired by the poetic, fragmented language of the essay film -- and its ability to hold both intimate reflections and structural critique -- the program imagines cinema as a gathering ground: a space where personal archives, fictional gestures, political ghosts, and speculative futures co-inhabit. These films stretch across disciplines and approaches, yet share a commitment to the aesthetic and ethical practices of bonding -- across silences, distances, ruptures, and shifting perceptions of time. The program features multigenerational voices in filmmaking, each engaging with what it means to hold onto love, place, memory, and possibility.

Screening | German Vampire FIlms:  Jonathan (1970) and Tenderness of the Wolves (1973)

This Halloween season, enjoy a selection of vampire films curated by Deutsche Kinemathek as part of their “Wild, Weird, Bloody. German Genre Films of the 70s” retrospective. Vampires and mortals are welcome to join for a special double bill of Hans W. Geißendörfer’s Jonathan (1970), followed by Ulli Lommel’s Tenderness of the Wolves (1973).  Hans W. Geissendörfer, Jonathan A political parable of Germany’s 1960s protest movement, Jonathan is set in an undefined past, when a vampire count ruled a small city and its surrounding lands. The bloodlusty count and his followers target the young, so a group of students plans a revolution, choosing Jonathan as their leader. He ventures to the castle on a reconnaissance mission, but his journey is disrupted by violent obstacles—an amuse-bouche compared to the bloody excesses that await him in the count’s abode.  Ulli Lommel, Tenderness of the Wolves In a post-war German city, Haarmann, a seasoned criminal, is recruited as a police informant. He uses the cover this position affords him to prey on young boys, luring them into his garret before killing them with a bite to the neck and turning their bodies into sausages. Everyone in town loves Haarmann’s meats, from black marketeers to the police inspector, but the tide turns when a nosy neighbor starts putting two and two together.  Both films are in German with English subtitles.
