Screening | Jazz Legends in Cinema: Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, & Elvin Jones

Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Elvin Jones are well known figures in the jazz world, but they also graced cinema history in rarely screened short films, screened at this event. Each film captures a unique moment in the stylistic development of jazz and cinema throughout the 20th century. Ellington and his orchestra play lightly fictionalized versions of themselves in Black and Tan Fantasy (1929). The film is a dazzling depiction of the jazz club scene during the Harlem Renaissance. Dizzy Gillespie (1964) blends concert footage and direct interviews where the charismatic Gillespie discusses his philosophies on the trumpet and approach to composition in Les Blank's verite-style documentary. Finally, Different Drummer: Elvin Jones (1979), covers everything from Jones' childhood, his beginnings in jazz, his celebrated work with John Coltrane, to a breakdown of his drumming style.

Screening | Debt, Dependency, & City Stories: Films on Postcolonial Economic Issues

This screening features films on the theme Debt, Dependency, and City Stories. Enslavement and colonization established persisting structures of economic dispossession, instituting dependency and debt as both historical and contemporary obstacles to the autonomous flourishing of the African continent and diaspora. Le Franc (1994) Djibril Diop Mambéty unleashed his exuberant and poignant cinema against the craven conditions of neocolonialism and financial deprivation on the African continent. Le Franc (1994) is one part of an unfinished trilogy dedicated to the minoritized experiences he always championed as meaningful and revelatory. The protagonist is a penniless musician, Marigo—played with lanky, languid charm by Dieye Ma Dieye—whose anarchic trek through Dakar with a lottery ticket in hand unfolds as both a deeply moving journey and an indictment of the colonially imposed CFA franc monetary system. Director: Djibril Diop Mambéty De cierta manera (One Way or Another) 1974/1977 Working in revolutionary Cuba, the fearless Sara Gómez upheld but also expanded the state’s vision of liberation to fully address ongoing issues of racialized economic disparity and marginalization in her hybrid documentary De cierta manera (1974/1977). Blending stark documentary footage and a knotted fictional love story, her monumental film is a lucid examination of education, labor, poverty, racism, sexism, and popular religion from the perspective of an Afro-Cubana. Director: Sara Gómez

After a lavish dinner party in an opulent Mexico City mansion, a group of wealthy guests finds themselves inexplicably unable to leave the room. As hours turn into days, social conventions unravel and civility gives way to paranoia, selfishness, and desperation. Director: Luis Buñuel Cast: Silvia Pinal, Enrique Rambal, Lucy Gallardo. Claudio Brook Luis Buñuel was a Spanish and Mexican filmmaker who is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. Buñuel's works are known for their avant-garde surrealism, which was also infused with political commentary. Buñuel's career spanned the 1920s through the 1970s. Buñuel earned five Cannes Film Festival prizes, two Berlin International Film Festival prizes, a BAFTA Award, and an Academy Award in 1972. He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1968 and then in 1972.

Video | Silence of Reason (2023): Forensic Video Essay (+ Filmmaker Q&A)

Enjoy a screening and Q&A with filmmaker Kumjana Novakova to discuss her film, Silence of Reason. Silence of Reason is a forensic video essay constructed as a performative research into the first international criminal tribunal case to enter convictions for war-time rape as a form of torture and sexual enslavement as a crime against humanity. While working solely with archive and testimonies, the film acts as a memory itself: elusive and fluid, it rejects framing, moving in all directions, spatial and temporal. The singular experiences of violence and torture by women from the Foča rape camps during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina become our collective memories, surpassing time and space. Director: Kumjana Novakova Following the screening, filmmaker will join remotely via Zoom for the Q&A

Screening | The Family Oppenheim (1838): Saviet Anti-Nazi Film (+ Discussion with Experts)

Experience the long-lost US premiere of The Family Oppenheim– a powerful Soviet-made anti-Nazi film written by acclaimed German-Jewish novelist Lion Feuchtwanger in collaboration with visionary Soviet Jewish filmmakers Grigorii and Serafima Roshal. Conceived in exile, censored in Britain, and banned in the United States, The Family Oppenheim, based on Feuchtwanger’s 1933 novel, stands as one of the earliest cinematic warnings against Hitler’s rise to power and fascism’s brutal reshaping of Germany. Premiering internationally in the spring of 1939 but soon banned and forgotten for nearly nine decades, the film now returns to US screens – newly restored, translated, and subtitled through a remarkable student-led research project at the University of Oregon led by Miriam Chorley-Schulz. Experience a rediscovered masterpiece once banned by American censors – a work of resistance, vision, and urgency that still echoes powerfully today. Director: Grigori Roshal Cast: Vladimir Balashov, Iosif Tolchanov, Ada Voytsik, Nikolai Plotnikov Accompanying the screening, Miriam Chorley-Schulz (Holocaust Studies scholar at the University of Oregon) and Rossen Djagalov (Russian and Slavic Studies scholar with NYU) will have an illuminating conversation tracing the film’s extraordinary journey from its complex conception to its celebrated 1938 Moscow premiere to decades of suppression, and finally, to its revival today.

Screening | Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny (2025): Documentary (+ FIlmmaker Discussion)

Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny takes a closer look at one of the most fearless political writers of modern times. Arendt came of age in Germany as Hitler rose to power, before escaping to the United States as a Jewish refugee. Through her unflinching capacity to demand attention to facts and reality, Arendt's time as a political prisoner, refugee, and survivor in Europe informed her groundbreaking insights into the human condition, the refugee crisis, and totalitarianism. Her major works, The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951), The Human Condition (1958), Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963), On Revolution (1963), and Crises of the Republic (1972) remain among the most important and most-read treatises on the development and impact of totalitarianism and the fault lines in American democracy. Arendt's reports on the trial of Adolph Eichmann also caused a firestorm of controversy, and its impact is still felt today.
