Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend more in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm less

Book Discussion | Horror Film and Otherness: What the Majority Dreads

What do horror films reveal about social difference in the everyday world? Criticism of the genre often more relies on a dichotomy between monstrosity and normality, in which unearthly creatures and deranged killers are metaphors for society's fear of the "others" that threaten the "normal." The monstrous other might represent women, Jews, or Blacks, as well as Indigenous, queer, poor, elderly, or disabled people. The horror film's depiction of such minorities can be sympathetic to their exclusion or complicit in their oppression, but ultimately, these images are understood to stand in for the others that the majority dreads and marginalizes. With author Adam Lowenstein. less

Discussion | AI, Art, and You (online)

This presentation by Apeksha Agarwal and Jack Reznicki will explore and explain the new world of producing more images with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. AI is a powerful tool that can help photographers explore new creative possibilities and generate ideas for your work. These generated images can both serve as a starting point for your own photography work, providing you with new and exciting ideas to explore and expand or it can simply produce interesting images that stand on their own. Issues such as the pros and cons of AI imagery will be discussed as well as the issue of copyright and ownership. Come and listen to these two knowledgeable presenters, and come to ask questions, as there are always many questions about what this technology can do and where it’s going. less

Wanda is a wanderer in a dreary Rust Belt town, drifting from bars to motels, jobs to jobs, and men to more men. She eventually tags along with Norman Dennis, a petty criminal on the run. He's desperate, disreputable, and abusive, but Wanda, meekly accepting her fate, still sleeps with him.
