Staged Reading | Legacy of the Holocaust: Intimate Relations

Directors Andreas Robertz and Mario Golden of OneHeart Productions lead the Intimate Relations project, unearthing silenced memories about the Holocaust using theater techniques. Two ensembles with non-Jewish German and Jewish-American actresses, each third-generation relatives of victims and perpetrators, worked with the two directors, playwrights, and a choreographer to explore autobiographical material in 2008 and 2009. This process yielded two plays, excerpts of which will be read as part of this presentation: Luna’s Bracelet (developed in Berlin) and Searching for a New Sun (developed in New York).

Opening Reception | 2 Solo Shows: Fred Herzog's Whisper and Shadows / Phillippe Halsman's Jump

Jump is a quirky and fun-filled series of over fifty vintage photographs taken five decades ago of movie stars, politicians, royalty, entertainers, artists, and authors, all jumping before Halsman’s camera. Whispers and Shadows is an intimate selection of color photographs made by Fred Herzog in Vancouver 1959 – 1989. Although these images make up a detailed visual record of the city and its transitions, they transcend those very details to become an elegiac musing on the nature of humanity itself.

Conference | Divining the Message, Mediating the Divine

Keynote speakers include Bernard Stiegler, Director of the Department of Cultural Development at Centre Georges-Pompidou; Mark C. Taylor, Chair of Religion; Brian Larkin, Professor of Anthropology;, and Samuel Weber, Professor of German at Northwestern University. Whether sacred symbols or sanctioned authorities, intermediaries have been both conduits for and barriers to access to the divine. Mediating objects, forms, rituals, and people have long been central to religious practice and belief. They are conditions of both possibility and impossibility, at one and the same time providing glimpses of the heavens and anchoring us to the earth.

Opening Reception | Paintings on Aluminum: Terry Rose's In Flux

The artist's first New York City solo exhibition features a new suite of paintings executed on aluminum. Residing in the liminal space between abstraction and representation, Rose's imagery emerges, elides, and expands in a constant state of becoming. There is a magical sense of momentary arrival, then a whisper, urging us to remain in the present, as change is inevitable. Conjuring evolving galaxies, the work explores the microcosm and the macrocosm, and their undeniable interconnectedness. Rose has mounted solo shows at Gallery NAGA, Boston, MA; Lenore Gray Gallery, Providence, RI; Anderson Gallery, Bridgewater State College, Bridgewater, MA; Jill Thayer Gallery, Bakersfield, CA; and the Pasadena Arts Space, Pasadena, CA. Selected group exhibitions include University of Maine Museum of Art, Bangor, ME; Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA; and the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA. His work is held in public and private collections including the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA; the Four Seasons Hong Kong, Hong Kong; Bellagio Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV; St. Regis Hotels in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Shenzen, China, and Dubai.
