Talk | Performance Artist Martha Wilson discusses her work

Wilson’s first performances were for an audience of one – her Pentax camera. Wilson commenced working as an artist in 1971 while teaching English Grammar at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She moved to New York in 1974, performing for real audiences at the Whitney Museum; the Kitchen, Hallwalls, P.S. 1 and then with the all-female DISBAND, whose members could not play any instruments, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; LACE; and Spazio Zero in Florence, Italy. DISBAND disbanded in 1982. Wilson continued to perform in her band character, Alexander M. Plague, Jr. Wilson subsequently became focused on changing the world in whatever small way possible through political satire. Wilson first performed as Nancy Reagan in 1984 for Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America. After Nancy lost her reelection bid, Wilson took on Barbara Bush. Presently, Martha Wilson is impersonating Tipper Gore, although she occasionally regresses to Barbara.

Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structure and Assembly at Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science, shared the Nobel Prize with Cambridge University’s Venkatraman Ramakrishna and Yale University’s Thomas A. Steitz. The three were recognized for their research on the structure and function of the ribosome. Yonath, Ramakrishna, and Steitz showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level. All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome.

Lecture | Critical Transgender Politics and the Shortcomings of Law Reform

A lecture by Dean Spade, Seattle University School of Law; Founder, Sylvia Rivera Law Project. As critical transgender politics continues to emerge and develop, there is an increasingly vocal demand for trans political formations to center racial and economic justice and respond to crises facing trans populations, such as criminalization and immigration enforcement, that have often been marginalized in a employment discrimination/family recognition-focused “LGBT rights” framework. This critical trans politics is often openly opposed to the legal reforms that dominate the most visible trans political schemes, such as the push to include “gender identity or expression” in hate crimes statutes. This lecture examines how we might take up the challenge of these critical interventions, recognizing the limits of formal legal equality demands, while still engaging with certain legal reform strategies. Specifically, the lecture will examine whether Foucault’s description of laws as tactics in the context of governmentality might be helpful to understanding and strategizing the role of law reform in social movements that understand formal legal equality to be a feature of neoliberalism that masks or even contributes to disparity.

Lecture | New York City and America's First Monument: A Memorial to General Richard Montgomery

With Sally Webster. On the porch of St. Paul's Chapel in lower Manhattan stands an elegant marble monument embellished with armor, spears, banners and other trophies of war. Most passersby are unaware that it is a memorial to General Richard Montgomery, the first officer to die in the Revolutionary War. Even fewer know that it was commissioned by the Continental Congress, January 1776, and is America's first monument. Learn about the monument's complex history linking the statesmanship of Benjamin Franklin, who commissioned the monument in France, the naming of New York City as the nation's first capital, and the monument's installation in 1787 at St. Paul's by the French architect and designer of the nation's capital, Pierre-Charles L'Enfant.

This first-time collaboration between Rowe and Zucker expands the artists’ recognized practices and engages a diverse public. It takes its name from a black-and-white starburst effect studio backdrop incorporated into a site-specific series of three freestanding wooden shelving structures. Serving as the primary focus of the installation, the shelving apparatus is replete with angled panels, cut-glass mirrored panes, and fragmented sheer black scrim that absorb, reflect, and refract a series of theatrical lighting effects replicating the studio backdrop.

Performance | An Excerpt from Normandy Sherwood's The Golden Veil

The National Theater of the United States of America's staging of an excerpt of the new three-person play, which is performed on an entirely handcrafted, collapsible set, was written by NTUSA member Normandy Sherwood and created collaboratively by NTUSA. The play explores how stories and myths Americans share are shaped by the teller and the circumstances of their telling. Following the performance the company will discuss their practice of presenting theater. Recently awarded the 2007 Spalding Gray award honoring innovative theatrical vision, the NTUSA is an ensemble theater company that democratically creates new works for traditional and non-traditional spaces. In the past seven years, the company has matched its focus on theatrical environment with an exploration of the history of America and American entertainment. The NTUSA’s theatrical creations are intensely visual and densely layered spectacles laced with questions and arguments, which invite the audience to engage as an active participant.

Hide your drugs! Hide your money! They're coming! Opera on Tap pays tribute to the tabloid-worthy rockstar characters of opera as only a divebar opera company can. Get what they mean? Rock on opera rockers!

Colloquium | The Exponential Growth of National and State DNA Databases

With Troy Duster, New York University. In the last five years, the national DNA database has more than doubled, and now has nearly eight million samples. What began as a resource of crime-fighting limited to convicted sex offenders and violent felons has now grown to include misdemeanors and even persons merely arrested for selected offenses. As the criminal justice system comes to rely more heavily on a technology that can be deployed with computers, and where "familial searching" is increasingly used (California now authorizes this technology), there is an exponential risk to family members who are not in an already racially distorted database. To blithely concluded that "if one has committed no crime, one has nothing to fear" is to misconstrue the fallibility of "cold hit" technology. Reception to follow.

Performance | MacGuffin: Improv Comedy

True to its name, MacGuffin, which is a term used to describe an event, character, or object that motivates the scene forward but isn’t what the scene is about, is one step ahead of the audience’s expectations. MacGuffin members have studied with New York’s finest improv theatres including The Upright Citizens Brigade, Gotham City Improv, and The PIT.
