Performance | Performance Art: Julius Deutschbauer's The Library of Unread Books I

Your imagination and a little bit of your time is what Julius Deutschbauer asks for- in return he will take you on a journey through the books that you have never read! Almost 600 books and volumes stand side by side on shelves, duly archived and labeled with the names of the non-readers, who have been questioned about their unread books by Deutschbauer. The heart of the library consists of all those interviews– while many new interviews will be added at the same time. He asks questions like “How is the weather today?” – “Which book have you not read yet?” – “What society do you think you will meet in your book?” or “Would you be lost in your book?”. He tries to get behind the stories of the unread books. The person being interviewed cannot and must not know the answers to Deutschbauer's many questions. He strongly encourages making presumptions, statements, expectations and intuition.

Discussion | Architectural Explorations in Books: The New York Work of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

Join SOM partners Roger Duffy, FAIA, and TJ Gottesdiener FAIA, and New York Magazine’s architecture critic Justin Davidson, in conversation about this legacy on the occasion of the recent publication of The Architecture of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, a five volume monograph on the firm that encompasses nearly its entire history. From historic landmarks that changed the face of the city, such as Lever House, 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza and the Pepsi-Cola World Headquarters, to little known masterpieces such as Manhattan House and the Marine Midland Building, to institutional structures for John F. Kennedy International Airport and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, to contemporary explorations such as Time Warner Center, 7 World Trade Center and the Skyscraper Museum, it could be argued that no single firm has had as profound an impact on the built environment of New York City as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Screening | Debra Anderson's Documentary Split Estate (2009): The Danger of Hydro Fracking

This compelling documentary shows the dirty side of natural gas, an energy source the industry touts as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. It maps a tragedy in the making, as citizens in the path of a new drilling boom in the Rocky Mountain West struggle against the erosion of their civil liberties, their communities, and their health. Exempt from federal protections like the Clean Water Act, the oil and gas industry has left this idyllic landscape and its rural communities pockmarked with abandoned homes and polluted waters. Many, gravely ill, fight for their health and for the health of their children. All the while, the industry assures us it is a “good neighbor”. We all pay the price in this devastating clash of interests that extends well beyond the Rockies. Aggressively seeking new leases in as many as 32 states, the industry is making a bid to drill in the New York City watershed, which provides drinking water to millions. As public health concerns mount, Split Estate cracks the sugarcoating on this industry and poignantly drives home the need for real alternatives. 76 min. The director will be present. We must stop gas drilling in the New York City watershed. Every person in this country deserves access to safe, clean drinking water. However, if New York State government allows the natural gas companies to use Hydraulic Fracturing (hydro fracking) process to extract natural gas in the Marcellus Shale in the Catskills where New York City's watershed is located, you can forget about turning on your tap and expect to be able to drink the water or use the water for showering or cooking. Hydro fracking is a process used by the energy companies to extract natural gas buried in rock formations by pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals underground to break apart the rock and release the gas. Chemicals used in fracking are toxic which pose a serious threat to our health either when chemicals are pumped underground or when waste fluids are handled and spilled on the surface or washed by flash flood downstream. This fracking process has already ruined the lives and the land of many residents in 34 states in our country including Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Pennsylvania and the list goes on. Now this is at our door step in New York State. We must stop the big natural gas companies from ruining the lives of New Yorkers. You can learn more about the danger of fracking to our drinking water and the air we breathe by attending.

Discussion | Moving toward Utopia: What Kind of City Lies Ahead?

A new concept of the city has emerged among contemporary urbanists. Architects and planners now frame the city not as a set of independently regulated functions but as a mesh of landscapes, spaces, and policies. Streets, paths, parks, and infrastructure are elements of a constantly shifting system that joins the particularities of place and overarching social goals. In this new environment, planning tactics, management techniques, policy goals, and fiscal strategies continuously interact. Building on the Fall 2009 "Rights of Way" symposium, “Moving Toward Utopia” addresses questions of power, health, equity, and ecology that confront and are fueled by new design strategies. “Moving Toward Utopia” will bring together a distinguished group of urban thinkers to examine the implications of new approaches to the design of public spaces. What kind of city lies ahead? PANELISTS INCLUDE: Tom Angotti, Nancy Levinson, & Bill Menking. Moderated By David Smiley.

Lecture | Perpetual Police? A Critical Sketch of UN Peacekeeping

Philip Cunliffe, a lecturer on international conflict in the School of Politics and International Relations, University of Kent, discusses the evolution of United Nations peacekeeping operations since the end of the Cold War and the various ways that this development has been conceptualized. He makes the case that a more critical understanding of “peacekeeping” is imperative and asks us to consider the stakes involved in the different understandings of peacekeeping. His own view is that international peacekeeping is best understood as a form of international policing rather than a way of transcending conflict. Cunliffe is working on a monograph examining developing countries’ personnel contributions to UN peacekeeping.

Workshop | Memoir Writing Workshop

Cullen Thomas, author of Brother One Cell and an instructor at Gotham Writers’ Workshop, will demystify the writing process at a free, introductory Memoir Writing class. Through short lectures and readings, Thomas will reveal how aspiring memoirists can relay their life stories with the finesse of fiction. Participants are encouraged to bring pen and paper to complete a short writing exercise designed to help them start crafting their own writing.
