Lecture | Postcolonial Play: Socializing Race and Language on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua

This talk by Amanda Minks examines the endurance of colonial legacies of race and language in the socializing activities of Miskitu children on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Along with institutional contexts, informal play and performance are key sites for socializing racialized concepts of persons and languages. The resilience of race as a prominent feature of cultural hierarchies raises questions about celebratory discourses (both popular and academic) of cultural interaction and hybridity, alternately viewed as creolization, transculturation or interculturalism. Minks is an Assistant Professor in the Honors College of the University of Oklahoma, where she is affiliated with programs in Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, Native American Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Author Reading | Federica Anichini discusses her book The Voices of the Body

Guido Cavalcanti, the first thirteenth-century author to gain the reputation of an auctoritas while still alive, has been handed down by literary tradition mainly for his Canzone Donna me prega, a dense philosophical treatise about love. This book looks at the Rime from the perspective of the minor poems, in which Cavalcanti demonstrates his theoretical conclusion by staging the venture of a lover inescapably doomed. Anichini focuses on two corporeal modes of speaking, spirits and tears. Her investigation of Cavalcanti's lines is grounded in the pages of the most popular medical handbook of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Avicennas Liber Canonis, as well as in the linguistic theories of the Modistae. Followed by a dramatic reading of Cavalcanti's poetry by Sax Nicosia. The book talk will be in English; the poetry reading in Italian with English supertitles.

Slide Lecture | Before Ellis Island: The Castle Garden Emigrant Depot 1855-1890

Eight million immigrants anxiously awaited entry into the United States between 1855 and 1890 in the old fort now known as Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Most Americans have heard of Ellis Island, which opened in 1892, but few have heard about its precursor, the Castle Garden Emigrant Depot, through which the vast majority of European immigrants entered the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century. This visual presentation will highlight the creation and operation of this fascinating institution.
