Conference | Russia's Expanding Engagement with International Law in Trade, Human Rights, and Energy Investments

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, some policymakers and other observers have advocated encouraging Russia’s increased participation in international organizations as a way to promote its transition to democracy and political cooperation with its former adversaries. Others have contended that Russia’s integration in such organizations should await greater political cooperation and progress in Russian democracy and rule of law. The relationship between Russia’s conduct in public international law, its transition to democracy, and its foreign policy will be examined in three areas: (1) Russia’s pursuit of membership in the World Trade Organization, and existing membership in the World Intellectual Property Organization, both bodies with binding dispute resolution mechanisms; (2) Russia’s participation in the European Court of Human Rights, whose decisions have affected the actions of Russia’s government and courts; and (3) the Energy Charter and other investment protection treaties, in particular Russia’s positions on jurisdiction of their dispute resolution bodies.

Opening Reception | Solo Shows: David Lyle's At the End of the Day / James Rieck's Mead Hall

Inspired by the heroic epic poem Beowulf, and J.R.R. Tolkien's 1936 lecture on this subject, The Monsters and the Critics, Rieck's new show engages not only with medieval themes of violence and romantic love, but also with the age-old division between literature and the visual arts. Working from personal family photos, and found vintage prints, Lyle seamlessly composes works that hark back to America of the 1950's and 1960's - not as they were, but as they are reimaged by our contemporary zeitgeist. A time of blissful naivete and dim-witted prejudice.
