Discussion | Talking With Pictures

There are a million and one ways to tell a story, and twice as many stories to tell. Whether it's a comedy, romance, noir, horror, or sci-fi, the look of a film has a major role in determining and defining the tone. But does the visual style define genre or does genre dictate visual style? The collaboration of directors and cinematographers results in the ability to capture and convey narrative through the use of shadow, darkness, and light. The gasp of fear or a feeling of nostalgia can be achieved by a gel on a lens or the framing of the scene. Join writer/director Lee Isaac Chung (Lucky Life), writer/direct Jacob Tierney (The Trotsky), Jon Kilik (producer of Babel and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), cinematographers Nancy Schreiberand (Every Day) and Lance Acord (Where the Wild Things Are, Lost in Translation), and other filmmakers and cinematographers in a discussion that proves there is always more than meets the eye. Moderated by Filmmaker Magazine's Brandon Harris. Thursday, April 29, 2:00 pm @ SVA Theater 2

Lecture | The Distribution of Firm Size in Africa and Its Implication for Industrial Policy

Dr. Janvier D. Nkurunziza is presenting a paper that analyzes the distribution of firms into four size categories, namely micro, small, medium and large. Using data on Keya’s manufacturing sector, his empirical results suggest that firm growth is associated with overall economic performance and research focuses on the economic crisis in Kenya’s economic crisis in the 1990s. The results imply that supporting SMEs indiscriminately, as is often suggested, could be too costly. The event is preceded by a wine and cheese reception and followed by a Q&A.

Lecture | Four Ways to Think about Kinds of Moral Theories

Eric Wiland of the University of Missouri-St. Louis speaks. Philosophers not only think about what to do--nearly everyone does that--but we also think about how to think about what to do. There are numerous moral theories, and it is both interesting and useful to have multiple illuminating ways of categorizing them. Here Wiliand introduce four specific, mutually compatible ways to taxonomize moral theories. He'll discuss how we might improve upon current moral theories by deploying these new taxonomical schemes in our critical evaluations of the current options. Eric Wiland works primarily on topics in ethics and practical reason. He investigates problems in practical philosophy by thinking about people who have various cognitive and motivational flaws, especially those who recognize that they have such flaws.

Opening Reception | Solo Shows: Marian Osher's Fearless Flying! / Judith Greenwald's Poem

Osher's in-flight fascination with the textures and abstractions of the earth and clouds has inspired her to create colorful mixed media paintings and wall hangings that help combat her fear of flying. With honesty and humor, she also shares in writing, the personal experiences that contributed to her fear, including her 9/11 flight, as well as the various "tools" that enabled her to return to flying without fear. Poems have been variously described as soul-making, life-cherishing and magic-inducing. They have been referred to as gifts, surprises, prayers and challenges. Much the same can be said about the paintings in Greenwald's show. Each of the highly textured paintings has been inspired by a particular poem.

Discussion | Will a Warmer World Be Stormier?

Over the next century, the Earth is expected to warm by several degrees due to continued and increasing emissions of greenhouse gases. Some of the impacts of this anthropogenic climate change can be predicted with a high degree of confidence: Warming almost everywhere, but especially at higher latitudes; rising sea level; melting of Arctic sea ice; wet regions becoming wetter, and dry regions becoming drier. Among the phenomena of greatest interest to the general public are storms of all kinds – everyday synoptic midlatitude storms, hurricanes, thunderstorms and severe storms, and the extreme precipitation, lightning, hail, and winds that accompany them.

Lecture | “Age is Unnecessary:” Shakespeare's King Lear and the Morality of Old Age

With Naomi Conn Lieber. If the moral fiber of a civilization can be measure by how it cares for its elderly, then we can learn much about both Shakespeare’s time and our own through his representations of old age. In King Lear, more than in any other play, we confront the paradox of honoring old age while acknowledging its challenges.

Join the editors of Granta, The Paris Review, and PEN America—along with three contributors to those magazines—for a freewheeling conversation about the past, present, and future of literary magazines, both in the United States and abroad. For two centuries now, literary magazines have played essential roles in the lives and careers of writers, editors, and readers—introducing and nurturing new authors, providing outlets for writers both overlooked and established, and publishing groundbreaking work that might not otherwise find a readership. How are those tasks changing in the internet age? And how does the job of the literary magazine vary across continents? John Freeman of Granta, M Mark of PEN America, and the new editor of The Paris Review will be joined by writers Rodrigo Fresán, Rawi Hage, and Peter Stamm in a conversation moderated by David Haglund, managing editor of PEN America.

Screening | Puppet Masters of the Macabre: a night of spooky stop-motion animation

Stop-motion animation has been around since the very beginning of film and is still around today. The art of manipulating rubber puppets and bringing them to life by posing them one frame at a time on film has seen something of a renaissance in recent history with the release of such films as Coraline, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and A Town Called Panic. Unlike it's shiny and new cousin, computer animation, stop-motion has always had a home-made and somewhat surreal quality to it. Perhaps it is for that reason that it is often the technique of choice for filmmakers like Tim Burton and Henry Selick, looking to create a strange and spooky world (Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, James and the Giant Peach). Aurelio Voltaire, a filmmaker firmly entrenched in the world of dark, puppet animation takes us on a little tour. Voltaire will screen excerpts from his reel (including station IDs created in the early days of MTV and The Sy Fy channel and a few of his award-winning shorts) as well as the work of other colleagues and luminaries of macabre animation. The screening will be immediately followed by a panel discussion lead by Voltaire. On the panel will be Micah Van Hove of Small and Creepy films and other stop-motion animators and industry professionals.
