Discussion | Biography on Film

In biographical documentaries, the personal moments and drama of an individual's life are captured in interviews and every day or behind-the-scenes footage. Seems simple, but in reality there is also the equally important influence of writing and storytelling. Join TFF filmmakers Ramona S. Diaz (Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey), Petter Ringbom (The Russian Winter), Andreas Koefoed (Ballroom Dancer), and Daniel A. Miller (Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie), and more discuss the unique ways in which they explored the life of a real individual and shaped that person's story into a film. Moderated by Basil Tsiokos (pictured), documentary consultant and Sundance Film Festival programming associate. Open to the public; no ticket required.

Conference | Autofiction: Literature in France Today

AUTOFICTION, combining two apparently contradictory concerns, autobiography and fiction, is the most important mode of writing in contemporary French literature. Serge Doubrovsky, who coined the term, has described autofiction as combining entirely real content and entirely fictional form. Using their real names, authors insert themselves into their own fictions in a search for self. Following its French beginnings, Autofiction has made headway in many other countries, notably in the U.S.

Performance | Tamy Ben-Tor's New Performance Work

Says the artist: "My consciousness is a sponge absorbing all of contemporary filth. The artistic process for me, in the form of a performance, is to solidify this sponge into a hard stamp tool and press it back onto the audience's consciousness for the duration of the performance. At the end, I hope they come out of it stained, impressed, as I am, by the ailments of this time which we live in." Tamy Ben-Tor was born in Jerusalem and currently lives and works in New York City. She has had solo shows at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; Kunsthalle Winterthur; and Cubitt, London. Ben-Tor has also participated in exhibitions at ZKM, Karlsruhe; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Biennale of Sydney; Manifesta 7; Mori Museum, Tokyo; MoCA, Los Angeles; Reina Sofia, Madrid; as well as the PERFORMA 05 and PERFORMA 07 Biennials, New York.

Screening | Korean Film: Hong Sang-soo's Oki's Movie (2010)

Documentary and narrative filmmaking elegantly merge in Oki's Movie, a quartet of interlocking vignettes by Korean auteur director Hong Sang-soo and one of the most elegant films of his oeuvre. A young woman hikes Seoul's Mount Acha twice, accompanied by different boyfriends: one a fellow student, the other a professor. She documents the trips and then edits together corresponding locations on the mountain: the parking lot, a small pavilion, a wooden bridge; her juxtapositions are revelatory, both of her relationship with each and of the power of cinema.

Concert | Kirtan Music with the Kirtaniyas

A melody starts, wistful and longing. It sweeps the crowd. The singer closes his eyes and his song bursts forth. It is wrenched from his heart, it seems. We call out in response. It is an easy mantra. Cymbals clash and punctuate a rhythm. Drums begin to throb and thunder. They say the drum beat represents the heartbeat of God maddened by love. That's The Kirtaniyas - four talented performers - all of them singers and musicians.
