Author Reading | Kaira M. Cabañas discusses her book The Myth of Nouveau Réalisme: Art and the Performative in Postwar France

On October 27, 1960, internationally-renowned art critic Pierre Restany named a group of Paris-based artists the "Nouveaux Réalistes" (New Realists). Besides Restany, this group included Arman, François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, and Jacques Villeglé. The Myth of Nouveau Réalisme is a timely critical reassessment of this important neo-avant-garde movement. Kaira M. Cabañas offers an interdisciplinary account of their work and challenges the ideas of Restany who endorsed the "direct appropriation of the real" in Nouveaux Réaliste production.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Rico Gatson's The Promise of Light

This new work by Rico Gatson is partly inspired by the book, The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson, which chronicles the black migration out of the American South spanning World War I through the early 1970's. Gatson's family undertook this journey, moving from Georgia to California in the late 60's for the promise of a new beginning. The "promise" is a reference to the intrinsic optimism of the distinctive California light, while alternately referencing the universal struggle inherent in striving toward idealized promise.

Screening | Spain for Export Film Festival

The last few years have seen many Spanish filmmakers pack their bags and move to foreign lands, mainly the United States, to produce their movies. Reasons vary: some studied in the US, others were invited by local producers to take on a project after the success of their previous films, while others were seduced by the ‘glamour’ of American independent cinema and underground experimentation. At a time of economic turmoil in Spain, this program reflects the reality of young Spanish filmmakers looking for a brighter future away from home. The many ways in which American culture insinuates itself into their work is especially noteworthy. Voice Over (Martín Rosete, Spain, 2012). 10’ A Place to Bury Strangers (Rafael García, Spain, 2012). 9’ Apagón/Blackout (Paula Román, Spain, 2012). 26’ Matador on the Road (Alexis Morante, Spain, 2011). 16’ Ella es Matador/She is a Matador (Gemma Cubero & Celeste Carrasco, Spain, 2009). 62’
