Symposium | What Now? 2014. Collaboration and Collectivity Symposium

What Now? is a series of public discussions and debates that culminate in a two-day symposium. Hannah Arendt said ”To live together in the world means essentially that a world of things is between those who have it in common, as a table is located between those who sit around it; the world like every in-between, relates and separates men at the same time.” Arendt’s quote touches on the politics of place—how the way in which we live and work together directly creates the political landscape we inhabit. Taking this central question of how we work together as a “public” and how we form a “community”, What Now? explores issues of borders, ownership of land and space, the influx of technology on how we learn, and questions modes and methods of diplomacy currently in place.

Lecture | The Rise of the New York Skyscraper

The skyscraper is America’s gift to world architecture and New York City is the city of skyscrapers. Some of the most iconic buildings of our time - Flatiron Building, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, and World Trade Center - are the icons of our dynamic city. This lecture explores how New York City skyscrapers responded to the technological advances of the 19th and 20th centuries, and how the events of 9/11 created new concerns for the shape and security of new skyscrapers. Speaker Seth Gopin is known to several generations of Rutgers University students for his dynamic lectures on the history of art. Prior to his retirement he also held several administrative positions at the university, including Director of Global Studies, and he furthered the course of international education in the United States and Europe.

Lecture | The Maps of Jan Huyghen van Linschoten

With Frederik Muller. In 1583, young Jan Huyghen sailed to the Portuguese colony of Goa, where he was employed as a clerk to the Archbishop. During his six years there, he had access to information about wind patterns, currents, coastlines, charts, pilot’s notes, customs, and countries—top-secret data which enabled the Portuguese to maintain their monopoly of European trade in the Far East for a hundred years. While in Goa, Huyghen (he added “van Linschoten” later) kept detailed travel accounts; when he returned to the Netherlands, he published them. His Itinerario (1596) provided crucial information allowing the English and the Dutch to break the Portuguese trade monopoly. The book contained drawings and maps, some drawn by Linschoten from his personal observations. In later years, he was the mapmaker on two abortive Dutch expeditions in search of the Northeast Passage.

Concert | Wyndham Baird, Folk Singer

"Wyndham Baird’s husky renditions of otherwise unheard-of folk jams carry the same water as his patently eclectic originals. Lifting urban love affairs to the stuff of Gospel, and twisting personal disappointments into universal folk anthems, Baird’s six-string and harmonica playing will make it so you won’t have to choose between the Leonard Cohen or Bob Dylan of your parents’ age. This old soul’s found room for both these giants throughout his seven-song self-titled debut." — Mike Levine, Deli Magazine
