Discussion | The Black Notebooks: What Heidegger's Denktagebuch Reveals about His Thinking during the Nazi Regime

The long-standing controversy about Martin Heidegger's political beliefs has been rekindled with the imminent publication of the first volumes of his Denktagebuch, a collection of notes and outlines he kept for nearly 50 years. Scholars in France have argued against the publication of his notes, pointing to suspected anti-Semitic remarks as proof that Heidegger was an anti-Semite, as well as a loyal member of the Nazi party. Peter Trawny, the editor of the volumes, has cautioned against reading the excerpts outside the context in which they appear.

Lecture | Re-Coding Nationalism: Muslims and Islamophobia in Norway

On July 22, 2011, two terror attacks in Norway were perpetrated by
a white Norwegian right-wing extremist. His stated motivation was to eradicate the Muslim presence in Norway and Europe by massacring Norwegian social democrats he believed to be responsible for allowing Muslim immigration to Norway since the 1960s. Seventy-seven people died that day, most of them teenagers. The terror attacks came at the end of a decade in which Islamophobic ideas (often originating in transnational far-right online activism) had become increasingly mainstream in Norwegian politics. How is one to understand the popularity and ubiquity of such sentiments in a small and prosperous country like Norway, in which Muslims make up 3.6 percent of the population? Speaker Sindre Bangstad is a postdoctoral fellow in the department of social anthropology at the University
of Oslo, and the author of
Anders Breivik and the Rise of Islamophobia.

Lecture | The Elusive Persian Phoenix: On the Identification of the Simurgh and Khvarenah in the Art of Pre-Islamic Iran

Ledcturer: Matteo Compareti. Since the beginning of the last century, the correct identification of the Simurgh has been a surprisingly contentious task for scholars. In contrast, the motif is well attested and securely attributed in the artistic works of the Islamic period, specifically in illustrated manuscripts, where the representation of this mythical creature is often accompanied by a description of the scene in Arabic or Persian. In these illustrations, the Simurgh is always a bird, usually represented in the manner of the phoenix as depicted in Chinese paintings. However, in works from before the first half of the fourteenth century, the Simurgh may have been visualized as a multicolored bird sharing characteristics with the rooster, the parrot or a generic bird of prey. Reception to follow.

Author Reading | Bulgarian Fiction Night

Albena Stambolova’s debut novel, Everything Happens As It Does, builds from the idea that everything happens exactly the way it must. Winner of the 2013 Contemporary Bulgarian Writers Contest, this is not a novel of reaching moral high ground, or a book about resolving relationships; this is a story whose mysteries are mysteries for a reason. Virginia Zaharieva was born in Sofia in 1959. She is a writer, psychotherapist, and mother. Her novel Nine Rabbits is among the most celebrated Bulgarian books to appear over the past two decades and the first of Zaharieva’s work available in North America.
