Symposium | Visualizing Universalism: The UNESCO Human Rights Exhibition, 1949-1953

The Visualizing Universalism symposium marks the opening of a new exhibition publicly displaying the original 1949 UNESCO Human Rights Exhibition and its archive for the first time in 60 years. This exhibition was the first international event that sought to visually represent the history and meaning of the then-recently adopted Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Using the exhibition as a platform for critical debate on contemporary human rights culture, the symposium explores insights provided by UNESCO’s first attempt to visualize and historicize the UDHR.

Lecture | Living in the Crypt: Mourning, Melancholy, and the Afterlife of Romeo and Juliet

We are told right at the start of Romeo and Juliet that their love is "death mark'd" - that they will be dead by the end of the play. But the lovers imagine themselves in states of living death so persistently before that promised end that a kind of mourning is deeply embedded in their self-awareness, in their love for each other, and in the audience's love for them. Ultimately, the play asks its audiences to reflect on the theater itself as a sacred space in which tragic characters cycle eternally through life and death. Speaker Adam Rzepka received his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Chicago in 2011, and is an Assistant Professor of English at Montclair State University. His publications include “'Rich eyes and poor hands': Theaters of Early Modern Experience,” in Shakespeare and the Senses (2010) and “Discourse ex nihilo: Lucretius in England to 1605” in Dynamic Reading: Studies in the Reception of Epicureanism (2010). He is currently researching literary uses of early modern psychological models.

Lecture | Unfree Labor, Rights & Market Development: A View from Eurasia

In most Western countries between the mid-17th and the
end of the 19th centuries, labor was similar to service, and
 wage conditions resembled
those of domestic servants with numerous constraints imposed
on workers’ mobility. In colonies, workers’ mobility was even more constrained and gave rise to extreme forms of dependency
not only under slavery, but also after it, as can be seen through
the growth of indentured labor in the Indian Ocean and obligatory labor in Africa. In this lecture, Alessandro Stanziani argues that unfree labor and forms of labor coercion were perfectly compatible with market development and capitalism. Alessandro Stanziani is a professor at L’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, and senior researcher at the Centre National des Recherches Scientifiques.
