Talk | Ethics Matter: A Conversation with Douglas Rushkoff, Digital Media Expert, Graphic Novelist and Documentarian

Douglas Rushkoff is the Carl Sagan of the digital cosmos—the lucid, deeply human navigator of the bewildering universe in which we now live. In an astonishing flood of books, articles, television shows, and lectures, he has charted the way digital technology changes the way we perceive time, space, others, ourselves. His most recent book, Present Shock, explores the obsession with the now which undermines our powers of reflection. Marshall McLuhan famously said that we shape our media, and then they shape us; Rushkoff will talk about this ineluctable fact, and about how can continue to shape our own lives. Journalist James Traub will interview Rushkoff and then the floor is open for questions from the audience, followed by a reception.

Concert | Lecture/Recital: Verdi's Miserere as Re-Composed by Gottshalk, Liszt and Jelly Roll Morton

With Joseph Smith, piano. The striking differences between the three settings of the Miserere from Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore reflect not just esthetic differences between the composers, but also between their audiences and milieus. American virtuoso Gottschalk exploits the recent popularity of the opera, Liszt creates a dramatic scena for piano, and Morton sets out to prove that jazz incorporates elements of the greatest music. Together, the three pieces illustrate the wide dissemination and appeal of Verdi, reaching the Grand Ducal Court of Weimar, New York City, and the raunchiest districts of New Orleans.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Kim Beck's A Great Piece of Turf

Beck presents a series of draped chain-link fences made of hand-cut, primed linen. Subtle graphite lines appear along cut edges, imperfections reveal themselves, and a glow emanates from painted undersides. Working from images of security fences and construction barriers, Beck’s life-sized fragments of fencing become collapsed, ineffective grids, failing to secure or protect. As remnants of what were once blockades, these pieces are meditations on fences, territory, turf, and even painting itself.

Gallery Talk | Sensory Tour of the Exhibit Several Circles

Guggenheim educator and art historian Georgia Krantz specializes in descriptive and multi-sensory programs for people who are blind or have low vision, and adapts the utilized techniques for programs for sighted audiences. Her work grew out of recognizing the power of the mind's eye, or "the different ways visitors who are blind or have low vision were experiencing - were seeing - works of art." The potential for sighted audiences to learn from differently sighted audiences is significant. Krantz poses the question, "In a world where everyone sees differently anyway, how is it even possible to precisely reveal the work through the lens of a single viewer?" Krantz will lead tours of Several Circles during which select works will be examined using different techniques adapted from her work with audiences who are blind. Props will be used and, for certain works, lights will be lowered. Visitors will have an opportunity to experience art through various senses, not just the privileged sense of sight. The aim is to sensitize observers to the diverse and nuanced means by which an augmented awareness of the sensorium capacitates an enhanced encounter with art.

New York is a skyscraper city and there is no better time to view Manhattan’s icons than after the sun sets and the lights go on. Fueled by competition and a dash of audacity, New York City is still producing one of mankind’s most remarkable skyline. NOTE: THIS TOUR SPENDS MUCH TIME INDOORS OR IN SUBWAYS AND GREAT FOR ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS.
