Talk | Using Carrots and Sticks for a Healthier Self: Evidence from a Weight Loss Challenge

We often wish to exercise more and eat better, yet fail to follow through on our intentions. Can we promote healthier behaviors by offering people to tie their hands? The present project studies this question in the context of a weight loss challenge where participants were offered to commit to exercise, lose weight or eat better. In a comprehensive framework, this study finds strong evidence of a demand for commitment and discusses the potential of commitment devices for promoting healthy behaviors. Speaker Severine Toussaert is a 5th-year PhD student in the Department of Economics. Her areas of research are behavioral economics, experimental economics and decision theory. She has worked on several topics including goal setting, preference for commitment versus flexibility, and trust. Lunch will be served.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Other | Performance Art: Sara Magenheimer's False Alphabets

On March 19, Sara Magenheimer began work on False Alphabets. Magenheimer will construct sculptural sets composed of photographs, objects, and film equipment that will become the backdrop for a new video. The script for the video, written by Magenheimer, continues the artist’s interest in voice, and employs cinematic tropes that conflate embodied language and location. The script will evoke the role of “The Radio DJ” epitomized by characters like Mister Señor Love Daddy in Do The Right Thing and DJ Stevie Wayne in The Fog. These figures act as the omnipotent narrators of their films as well as create diegetic soundtracks to their cinematic worlds. Simultaneously addressing the movie going audience, the other characters, and their communities, their music is embodied rather than a superficial add-on for the viewer’s emotional manipulation. Collaborating artists Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Free Paint (Magenheimer and Saunier) and more will perform the music for and act as narrators in this video. Performers will make mixes that involve narration and music. These mixes will function as a soundtrack for the video.

Lecture | A Citizen's Guide to the Participatory State: Beware of the Leopard?

In his presentation, Dominik Steiger will explore citizen’s participation which is demanded not only by the people in Russia or the Maghreb but also in Germany – a country one might not immediately identify as displaying a democratic deficit. Although it is true that Germany already performs at a very elevated democratic level, Steiger will argue that there are many things to be improved in order to truly speak of a Participatory State. Even if politicians and others warn of the dangers of participation, it will be shown that the dangers are containable; either because they are no dangers at all or because the application of the separation of powers doctrine to participation prevents these dangers from realizing.
