However, when John Keller and his mother Jocelyn move in across the street, the Jacobs’ wholesome façade begins to crack. In the Midwest is a play about sex, sibling rivalry and the importance of neighbors.

Discussion | Beyond Piketty (and Before the Deluge): Natural Capital in the Twenty-First Century

A panel discussion with Claude Henry, Geoffrey Heal, Peter Keleman, and Stephen Cassell. Thomas Piketty’s book Capital in the Twenty-First Century is a major contribution to economics, economic history and our understanding of fundamental social and political issues we face today. Equally fundamental, as far as capital in the twenty-first century is concerned, is the condition of those components of natural capital – biodiversity, water, soil, energy, climate – that will shape the future of mankind on earth.

Slide Lecture | Peter Mendelsund discusses his book What We See When We Read: An Examination of the Book Designer's Art

The practice of designing jackets and covers for books becomes a lens through which to view the question: What do books look like? (How much of the imaginative content of the reading experience is the author's, and how much is the readers; who owns the reading experience; can an author preside in some real way over our reading imaginations; what are the parameters which hem in the reading imagination? How should books be packaged and sold?) These questions will be touched on during a rich visual tour of Peter Mendelsund's design work.

Lecture | The Irish and Their Associations in New York and London

Irish immigrants in New York and London have long organized themselves into county associations. This pattern is neither unique to these cities nor to this immigrant group. But the Irish and their love of county provides a rich and enduring example of this type of immigrant association and in the years proceeding World War II the networks of county associations in both these immigrant hubs provided important social, cultural, benevolent and psychological maps. This presentation demonstrates how this type of associational behavior provides a fascinating lens through which immigration patterns can be elucidated and compared. Lecturer Miriam Nyhan received her BA and MPhil degrees from University College Cork and her PhD from the European University Institute, Florence. With a special interest in twentieth-century migration, she has focused primarily on Irish immigrants who settled in New York and London.
