Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Lecture | A History of the Ugly

A lunchtime lecture by Rachel Eisendrath. In medieval and Renaissance literature, ugliness often serves as an outward mark of a character’s internal depravity. Such a character is self-condemned, destroyed from within. But there are also cases of ugly characters who stand up for their ugliness, as though in protest against the moral code constructed by the larger society—or even by the text itself: it is not that their ugliness hides an internal beauty, but that they reject the standard of what constitutes beauty or ugliness, frolicking and reveling in the cool mud of what has been condemned as dirty or loathsome. Assistant Professor of English and Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Studies Rachel Eisendrath focuses on what Ben Jonson called “turdy-facy-nasty-paty-lousy-fartical” characters in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, and Jonson.

In this new selection of works, atonal and prismatic spectrums appear as personifications of themselves, and her characters become like embodiments of various tones.

Concert | Playing God, a New Rock Opera About the Ethics of Genetic Interventions

Join the conversation about the ethics of genetic interventions, including “designer babies” and “savior siblings,” at a one-night-only presentation of the new rock opera Playing God, created by Finnish bioethicists and musicians Matti Häyry and Tuija Takala and legendary drummer Corky Laing (of the celebrated rock band Mountain). Playing God tells the story of a fictional small town whose inhabitants have enjoyed the benefits of gene technology for decades. As the paths of the young characters—whose lives, loves and futures have been shaped by genetic intervention—collide, the secrets, sacrifices and ethical compromises of the community are exposed. Through the story, music and characters, Playing God challenges the audience to study their own ethical convictions, raising open-ended questions about parental choices, perfection, identity and what it means to be human in a world when our fundamental genes are open to manipulation. Following the performance, there will be an ethics panel discussion moderated by Joseph J. Fins, MD, The E. William Davis, Jr. MD, Professor of Medical Ethics and Chief of the Division of Medical Ethics, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Director of the Research Ethics Consultation Service, Weill Cornell CTSC.

Jazz | Miles Wide, Indie Jazz Act

A rising indie solo act, Miles Wide has played for audiences in Boulder, Colorado, Cambridge, Massachusetts and Paris, France – all in the past year. Frontman Kyle Donovan quit a desk job in Boulder in early 2014 and started a relentless pursuit of his homegrown music career. Since then, he has appeared live in-studio on WBER 90.5 FM, WBZA 98.7 FM, and WRUR 88.5 FM's "Open Tunings.” As an independent, “do-it-yourself” artist, he books and promotes all of his own shows, designs his logos and website, records and engineers his own albums, and manages all the other odd jobs that working musicians face.
