Screening | Dance on Film: Massine's Choreartium

Screening of Choreartium, a work from the repertory of Ballets Russes, performed by Bayerisches Staatsballett. Choreartium, which premiered in 1933, is one of a series of symphonic ballets choreographed by Léonide Massine. Massine was the principal dancer and choreographer for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes from 1915 to 1921 and one of Europe’s leading dancers and choreographers for the following two decades. David Vaughan will introduce and screening. Mr. Vaughan is a dance archivist, historian and critic. He was the archivist of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1976 until the company was disbanded in 2012. In his long career, Vaughan has been a dancer, choreographer, actor and singer whose work has been seen in London, Paris, and in New York, both on- and off-Broadway, as well as in regional theatres across the United States, in cabarets, on television and on film.[3] Vaughan's ballet choreography was used in Stanley Kubrick's 1955 film Killer's Kiss, danced by Kubrick's wife at the time, ballerina Ruth Sobotka. Lecture | Sovietizing Russian Ballet in Co-Produced Cold War Films: Two Scenes

A talk by Marsha Siefert, the 2016 Fellow for the Study of Russia and Ballet. This presentation will use archival material from Russia, the US and the UK to reconstruct the portrayal of Russian ballet in two scenes from Soviet co-produced films. In Tchaikovsky (1969), Maya Plisetskaya portrays Tchaikovsky’s “lost love” Desirée through dance; the UK-USSR 1983 biopic Anna Pavlova dramatizes Fokine choreographing “The Dying Swan.” The stories behind these scenes of “Sovietized” Russian ballet enact the intricate pas de deux of Soviet screen partnerships with the West.

Discussion | Persian Poetry

Daily developments in the Middle East demand our attention to politics, history and religion, but poetry is often overlooked in perspectives brought to bear on our attention to them. Literary intersections between the West and Middle East are longstanding, from Goethe and Emerson right up to the present day. Five noted literary figures Porochista Khakpour, Roger Sedarat, Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr.; Tom Sleigh, and Don Share gather to discuss and illuminate the issues that make Persian poetry more than ever pertinent to our own time and contemporary literature. The discussion is moderated by Arezoo Moseni.

Discussion | Science and Art in China

In 1607 the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), in collaboration with his colleague Xu Guangqi (1562–1633), translated the first six books of Euclid's Elements of Geometry into Chinese. Among those to take a serious interest in this work was the prominent mathematician Mei Wending (1632–1721), but his Jihe tongjie (General Explanation of (Euclid's) Geometry) eliminated most of the demonstrations and redrew many of the original diagrams. Why were the basic elements of western mathematics, so essential for the Scientific Revolution, as well as the discovery of mathematical perspective that revolutionized western artistic vision, not similarly appreciated by Chinese intellectuals and artists? Are the examples of the limited reception of Euclid's Elements by Chinse mathematicians and the general lack of interest in the principles of mathematical perspective in Chinese art in any way related?

Employing a variety of media – drawing, collage, painting and sculpture – the Ravenna-born, Rome-based artist creates works infused with a penchant for hybridity and juxtaposition in ways that trigger the mind and the senses. Exploring the poetic possibilities that open up at the crossroads of making and unmaking, disclosing and concealing, Gardini appears to be most at home where boundaries can be blurred and easy categorization defied.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Arash Hanaei

Arash Hanaei has been portraying the city of Tehran since 2008. His digital drawing series entitled Capital dissects its shifting pattern of streets and their inherent contradictions. Based upon his own documentary photographs, the artist interprets the capital city’s constant transformation and the chaotic superimposition of dissonant layers with formal austerity. Primarily black-and-white or greyish-green, the drawings reduce the original amount of information on the photographic image to a minimum and direct the viewer’s attention to the cultural and geopolitical underpinnings inscribed in the urban landscape.
