Gallery Talk | CANCELLED!!!! American Perspectives: Stories from the American Folk Art Museum Collection: Exhibition Tour

Everyone has a story to tell--a life lived, witness to and participant in events both private and shared. Such moments are captured by American folk and self-taught artists in powerful visual narratives that offer firsthand testimony to chapters in the unfolding story of America from its inception to the present. American Perspectives: Stories from the American Folk Art Museum Collection showcases more than seventy stellar works of folk and self-taught art from the museum's premier collection. Beautiful, diverse, and truthful, the art illuminates the thoughts and experiences of individuals with an immediacy that is palpable and unique to these expressions. The artworks are organized into four sections--Founders, Travelers, Philosophers, and Seekers--that respond to such themes as nationhood, freedom, community, imagination, opportunity, and legacy. Evocative visual juxtapositions and accessible contextual information further reveal the vital role that folk art plays as a witness to history, carrier of cultural heritage, and a reflection of the world at large through the eyes, heart, and mind of the artist.

Discussion | CANCELLED!!!! Russian Information Operations in East Europe: Techniques and Western Responses

A panel discussion about Russian information operations in East Europe. The East European nations formerly controlled by the Soviet Union remain the targets of intense Russian information operations, aimed at undermining their relationships with the EU and painting a nostalgic, positive picture of their Soviet past. In many cases, Russian information operators also make common cause with native illiberal forces in these countries, such as anti-immigration activists. Three specialists will discuss the nature of Russian information efforts and the most effective ways to respond to them. PANELISTS: -- Thomas Kent, Adjunct Associate Professor; former president of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; former editor at The Associated Press -- Corina Rebegea, Fellow-in-Residence at the Center for European Policy Analysis, Washington, D.C. -- Jeffrey Simon Willard, Director of Global Engagement, FDR Foundation, Harvard University

Author Reading | CANCELLED!!!! Poor Queer Studies: Confronting Elitism in the University

In his new book, Matt Brim repositions queer studies toward an explicit focus on poor and working-class people, places, and pedagogies by focusing on spaces not often considered by scholars in the academy, and outlines the ways in which the field has been driven by elite institutions that neglect and rarely serve poor and minority students. In so doing, Brim jumpstarts a queer-class knowledge project committed to anti-elitist and anti-racist education.
