Lecture | !!! CANCELLED!!! Laboratory of the Future: Lenin's Body Between Biochemistry and Art

The Soviet sovereign project was organized around the figure of "Leninism"-- the discursive and material construct that consisted of Lenin's texts and quotes, images and sculptures, and Lenin's physical body in the Mausoleum. As the center of Sovereignty, "Leninism" was constant and eternal; it was the only body of knowledge that could not be questioned or transcended within the Soviet political discourse. In fact, however, to remain "the same" Leninism was continuously changed and reinvented throughout the Soviet history. Leninist texts were censored and misquoted, Leninist images were re-edited and retouched, and Lenin's physical body in the Mausoleum was continuously resculpted and restored with the help of biochemical and artistic techniques. This talk focuses on the sovereign center of the Soviet communist project through the prism of the scientific, artistic and discursive practices that have been mobilized to maintain and transform the Leninist body for the past 96 years. Speaker Alexei Yurchak is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.

Gallery Talk | !!! CANCELLED!!! American Perspectives: Stories from the American Folk Art Museum Collection: Exhibition Tour

Everyone has a story to tell--a life lived, witness to and participant in events both private and shared. Such moments are captured by American folk and self-taught artists in powerful visual narratives that offer firsthand testimony to chapters in the unfolding story of America from its inception to the present. American Perspectives: Stories from the American Folk Art Museum Collection showcases more than seventy stellar works of folk and self-taught art from the museum's premier collection. Beautiful, diverse, and truthful, the art illuminates the thoughts and experiences of individuals with an immediacy that is palpable and unique to these expressions. The artworks are organized into four sections--Founders, Travelers, Philosophers, and Seekers--that respond to such themes as nationhood, freedom, community, imagination, opportunity, and legacy. Evocative visual juxtapositions and accessible contextual information further reveal the vital role that folk art plays as a witness to history, carrier of cultural heritage, and a reflection of the world at large through the eyes, heart, and mind of the artist.

Talk | !!! CANCELLED!!! The Work of the Humanities in the Financial University: Crisis, Closure and a Market Correction

This talk will consider the role of the humanities in undergirding the non-profit character and status of the university in the early twenty-first century, a designation that has become crucial for universities' specific form of capital accumulation. Reviewing contemporary fiscal crises, the so-called "crisis of the humanities," and recent college closures, I will argue that the humanities play a dual role in the contemporary university: they both make money for universities and ground the discourse of losing it. Speaker Leigh Claire La Berge is an Associate Professor of English at BMCC CUNY.

Author Reading | !!! CANCELLED!!! Nicolas & Adrien: A World with Two Sons

In a series of intimate photographs, Martine Fougeron tells the story of her two sons as they grow up between New York and the South of France. Divided in two parts, Teen Tribe (2005-10) and The Twenties (2010-18), this bildungsroman in pictures explores the evolution of Nicolas and Adrien as they navigate between adolescence and full adulthood. By managing to be both distanced and soft, it gives us a universal tale about the process of growing up.

Concert | !!! CANCELLED!!! Migguel Anggelo: LatinXoxo

Like his namesake, Migguel Anggelo reminds us that he is, quintessentially, a renaissance man. His work is brought to life through an insatiable appetite to create without bounds, express poetically, provoke deeper thought, and to achieve the art of surprise. Anggelo invokes muses from art history as he charts his evolving journey as a Latino immigrant and a queer man. He expresses himself through elaborate costume, musical composition, and monologue, evoking the "showmanship of Desi Arnaz and the performance art of Klaus Nomi" (Theater Scene). His influences and stylistic ambitions range from mime icon Marcel Marceau and silent-film comedian Charlie Chaplin to pop stars David Bowie and Freddy Mercury. LatinXoxo is an outrageously queer and gender-bending concert experience. Anggelo peels onion layers of personas, putting on and stripping off "Latin lover" cliches as he reckons with the tragic death of his homophobic and disapproving father. As BroadwayWorld noted at a recent performance of LatinXoxo at Joe's Pub, "a Migguel Anggelo performance is guaranteed to entertain and enthrall."
