City Walk | A Sense of Permanence: An Architectural Walking Tour

In conjunction with the exhibition Sites of Impermanence, Richard Gluckman leads an architectural walking tour of his Chelsea projects that transformed 19th and early-twentieth century warehouses and industrial buildings into some of the most iconic "white cube" galleries, helping to define a typology that continues to have global influence on the art world today. The 1987 renovation and conversion of a Chelsea warehouse at 548 West 22nd Street--into a 40,000-square-foot, four-story exhibition facility for the Dia Center for the Arts--became a model for exhibition facilities of this type. Guided by a sensitive and thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse, Gluckman created spaces and structures that emphasized the sympathetic presentation of contemporary art: column-free interiors and diffused natural light that preserved details from a building's industrial past, like exposed ceilings that celebrated the original structures. This rigorous design approach soon drew others to a then-desolate Chelsea neighborhood, including Paula Cooper Gallery, Mary Boone Gallery, and Gagosian, to solidify the neighborhood as the center of activity for the global art world.
