Conference | Digital Platform Economies – Value from Data?

A host of studies demonstrate the perils of digital platforms and automated systems: algorithmic bias, algorithmic harm, data privacy, and deep fakes. What is less clear are the myriad ways that digital platforms structure economic/financial relations and transactions in the first place. Understanding processes of data valuation is a crucial aspect of broader inquiries into the promises and perils of digital platforms. This 2-day conference showcases programmatic research on data valuation. Each session considers the question: How do platforms produce value and monetize those value forms? The sessions are designed to stimulate discussion about value forms and valuation processes through particular lenses: digital assets, Web3 tokenization, digital twins, automated optimization, and generative AI. The discussions will consider the extent to which standard concepts (rent, commodity, property, accumulation) are relevant to these cases and examine continuities and discontinuities across different modes of digital value production.

Gallery Talk | Francesca Woodman: Exhibition Tour

The exhibition presents key prints from approximately 1975 through 1980. Photographing in Providence, Rhode Island; Rome; Ravenna, Italy; and New York, Woodman situated herself and others within dilapidated interiors and ancient architecture to compose her tableaux. Using objects such as chairs and plinths along with architectural elements including doorways, walls, and windows, she staged contrasts with the performative presence of the figures, presenting the body itself as sculpture. In the Self-Deceit series (1978), she photographed herself nude in a room with crumbling walls, standing, crawling, or crouching with a frameless mirror. Through compositional fragmentation and blurring, Woodman throws into question the conceit that photography offers a revelation of the self.

Fair | October 7th, 06:29AM: An Immersive Exhibition on Nova Music Festival Massacre

To celebrate the end of his two years of service as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces' paratrooper division, Tomer Meir joined 13 of his friends at the Nova Musica Festival on the weekend of October 6 in Re'im in southern Israel. It was his first ever music festival. "It was the best moments of my life. I can't explain the state we were in," the 21-year-old told the New York Jewish Week. "It was pure love -- people dancing, laughing, smiling. All the good stuff that we're living for." Until 6:29 a.m. on Saturday morning. The red alerts, the rockets and the running. "The music stopped. The rockets started. We started running for our lives," Meir said. Meir is a survivor of the Nova Music Festival Massacre, where Hamas militants killed 364 festival-goers and took at least 40 hotstages on the morning of Oct. 7. Six months after the attack, Meir is in New York sharing his story as part of an interactive exhibit about that day, which he says is helping him heal. The Nova Musical Festival exhibition, titled October 7th, 06:29AM, is an immersive step into what it was like to be at the festival when it was attacked. Screens show clips from the attack on Nova are displayed next to personal and camping items taken from the festival recreating the festival layout. The exhibit, which debuted in Tel Aviv for 10 weeks in December, was created by Israeli designers and cultural producers, many of whom were producers with the Nova Music Festival itself. It was brought to New York with the help of Scooter Braun, the Jewish-American music producer and philanthropist. The exhibit recreates the visuals and sounds of the Nova Music Festival massacre. But the New York version is in some ways "more intense," according to Yael Finkelstein, a volunteer who collected items from the Nova site and helped set up both the Tel Aviv and New York exhibit. New elements at the New York exhibit include dozens of video testimonies from survivors, Zaka volunteers and family members, as well as graphic raw footage taken on Oct. 7 from both festival-goers and Hamas militants. In addition, survivors of the massacre such as Meir and Sassi will be at the exhibit every day to share their stories and answer questions. Their goal, Meir said, is to show New Yorkers that the horror they experienced could happen to anyone.

Lecture | American (Slavery) Caste, not Race

Lionel McPherson argues that the permanent, stark social disadvantage of Black America is best understood as a caste phenomenon, as in a fixed, color-conscious, social status hierarchy. Caste analysis of American color consciousness calls attention to the intergenerational nature and national specificity of the Black American situation, rooted in American inherited slavery and enforced segregation. Race analysis, by contrast, traffics in flat blackness, turning Africa-identified descendants of American slavery (capital “B” Black Americans) from a distinctive national people, neither native nor immigrant, into a vague racially “black” people. What McPherson calls “race intrigue” principally functions as a distraction—from the subjugation, exploitation, and nonrepair of the historical American “Slaves”/“black” caste—by (mis)directing focus from Black (American) equality politics to some tepid antiracism, or general anti-antiblack racism, agenda.

Opening Reception | Calvin Kim: Soft Pangs

Through enigmatic paintings, Calvin Kim seeks to preserve and prolong the unfolding of dreamlike, intimate moments. Alone or in pairs, Kim’s subjects are depicted amid contemplative, emotional states. Birds huddle close together while perched on a branch, blue figures chain smoke as the silhouette of a house burns in the distance, or a cat struggles with a foe– that might be just a shadow of itself.  Absurdity, humor, and lightness reappear throughout Kim’s works, offsetting themes of melancholy and vulnerability– as in one portrait of a moth, shown with its mouth agape and eyes watering as it is about to be “raptured” by a pair of rapidly approaching headlights. Despite the impending danger, an atmosphere of magic suffuses the scene–from the warm, shimmering glow of the headlamps, to a cluster of wildflowers blooming from the darkness– indicative of nature’s continuous cycles of birth, death, and renewal.  Like peering through a window to catch a glimpse of someone else’s dream, the works transmit psychological undercurrents through form, color, light, and texture, conveying the mood of an experience rather than mere description. Ghostly traces of pentimenti heighten this effect, while scumbling lighter or brighter colors over contrasting tones adds tooth and dimensionality to the canvases, building a layered, dynamic surface that reflects the complex nature of memory itself. Light is reflected through clouds, mist, fog, and exhaled breath, ephemeral phenomena that underscore the precarity of life. Inhabiting the slippery boundary between slumber and waking, tragedy and humor, sorrow and hope, these pictures speak to the intrinsic poetry of fleeting moments.

Opening Reception | Trish Tillman: Grooming Kit

Tillman continues her interest in the intersection of the body, design, and furnishings, with her meticulously crafted modular wall sculptures. Using digital and industrial sewing and upholstery techniques, and hand-drawn patterns printed on leather, she expands her exploration of commercial materials and adds more personal references prevalent during her youth, from cartoons to toys and keychains. In Tillman’s latest series, disjointed body parts that could easily switch from breast to bum merge with iconic symbols of sweet innocence - from strawberries to unicorns - in a shorthand symbolic language akin to emoji or stickers.

Talk | Artist Talk: Poster Cult (in-person and online)

As one of Switzerland’s foremost poster designers, Dafi Kühne produces diverse work that plays with the contrast between old production tools and modern layouts. While printed on traditional presses from the 1960s, his posters do not look like typical letterpress prints. Instead, they connect to the history of letterpress production while pushing the boundaries through modern tools of what is possible. Through the use of of analog printing presses, computers, lasercutters, and freshly cast hot-metal-type, he creates wildly creative, large-format posters. From his vast letterpress studio in the Swiss Alps, Dafi Kühne simultaneously drives poster culture and upholds the cult of the poster. In this talk, Dafi will give insight into his processes and his approach to Swiss typographic poster design.

Book Discussion | Duel in the Deep: The Hunters, the Hunted, and a High Seas Fight to the Finish (online)

Author David Sears will speak on his book. Duel in the Deep recounts the story of the U.S. Navy destroyer Borie, an outmoded, thin-skinned “tin can” of World War I vintage, which set out alone to track down an elusive U-boat. The Borie had thus far toiled in the war’s backwaters, her crew of young reservists anxious to prove its mettle. When Borie trapped U-405 on the surface, that chance arrived. As Borie’s deck guns unleashed withering fire and U-405’s skipper angled his submarine to launch torpedoes, Borie’s young skipper—a salesman in civilian life--resorted to the original (and once the only) means of sinking a submarine: ramming, full speed ahead, consequences be damned. Borie’s slashing collision with U-405 ignited a swashbuckling, no-holds-barred brawl of cannons, machine guns, small arms, and even knives and spent shell casings. In the wreckage-strewn aftermath, desperate sailors on both sides fought for survival in a heaving, frigid, unforgiving sea. Duel in the Deep weaves together high-stakes strategy and lethal gamesmanship with poignant human backstories, pounding air/surface/subsurface action, epic heroism, and wrenching sacrifice.
