Screening | Frederick Wiseman’s Documentary Aspen (1991)

David Denby writes, “[Wiseman] does not, as you would expect, satirize the liberal intellectuals who gather [in Aspen] for high-minded conferences, or the wealthy tourists who show up to ski. Most of the movie, as far as I can tell, is about the year-round residents. Such people live amid transcendent beauty (the frequent, stunning shots of the mountains make that clear), yet we find them seeking transcendence not in nature but in religious services, in counseling and group therapy, in quack medical cures, in cosmetic treatments and surgery." 146 min.

Concert | Indie Rock: Javelin / Warpaint

Musical omnivores and darlings of David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label, Javelin uses colorfully painted boomboxes that form large speaker totems (“boombaatas”) which can hang from the ceiling or stack up on the floor like pyramids for their performances. Sounds range from broken dance jams to relaxed instrumental cut-ups, featuring long forgotten samples, chopped and re-assembled with drums, wooden recorders, old keyboards, handmade thumb pianos or whatever instruments are readily at hand. Javelin is George Langford, Tom Van Buskirk, and friends. Warpaint is Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums), an all-girl quartet from Los Angeles. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into songs that skirt the line between psychedelia and intimacy.

Dance Performance | New Dance: Paul Taylor II / Naganuma Dance

7:00 pm – Open Contemporary Fusion dance class with Darcy Naganuma of Naganuma Dance 8:00 pm – Naganuma Dance 8:50 pm – Paul Taylor II Paul Taylor established Taylor II in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or technical limitations. To do this, he looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world. The repertoire spans the broad spectrum of his work. Several of the dances performed by Taylor II have been re-worked from the original Dance Company's version to enable the smaller ensemble of dancers to perform them. Under the artistic direction of the Hawaii-born/half-Japanese Darcy Naganuma, Naganuma Dance (pictured) is a contemporary dance company that draws upon many different disciplines to create captivating and socially dynamic dance works. Founded in 2006, Naganuma has assembled a company of multi-ethnic and physically tempestuous performers, presenting works that touch upon themes of cultural dissonance, the absolute and the relative, gender and class, through inventive choreography as performed by a cross-cultural cast of dancers.

Concert | Kronos Quartet performs world premiere work

The world premiere of composer Christine Southworth’s Super Collider, performed by the acclaimed Kronos Quartet and 14 musicians of Gamelan Galak Tika using the Gamelan Electrica, a new electronic “virtual gamelan” designed and developed by Alex Rigopulos (founder/CEO of Harmonix Music, inventor of video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band). Southworth was inspired by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN—the largest machine ever built—designed to recreate the beginning of the universe. Super Collider takes two sound worlds and traditions, the string quartet and the ancient gamelan, and juxtaposes them through the unlimited sonic universe of electronics, evoking string theory’s concept of “universal harmony.” Kronos will also perform works by Steve Reich and Café Tacuba. Kenyan Luo musicians Kenge Kenge, making their New York debut, open the evening, exploring the traditional acoustic roots of exhilarating benga dance music.
