Lecture | What Do the Mohammed Cartoons and Carrie Prejean Have in Common? Freedom of Speech: The History of an Idea

Is freedom of speech a universal right, applicable to all people in all places at all times? Or is it (like other Western civil rights) culturally determined and produced and thus to be limited in its extent in order to protect religious and racial minorities? The protests in 2006 over the so-called Mohammed cartoons, challenging the right of artists to caricature a sacred subject, brought to the fore this decades-long debate within the U.S. concerning the extent of permissible speech and indeed put in doubt what once seemed a foundation stone of Western liberal democracies. In this lecture Elizabeth Powers will discuss some 18th-century thinkers whose anxieties about freedom of speech mirror contemporary concerns about the harmful effects of speech. Despite their seemingly "advanced" views, radical thinkers like Condorcet, Holbach, and Rousseau were uncomfortable with free debate and dissent, precisely because they were divisive. Fears concerning unpopular speech, should the "people" not be constrained, have surprising intellectual origins. A writer in residence in the Library's Wertheim Study, Elizabeth Powers, as chair of the Columbia University Seminar on 18th-Century European Culture, sponsored a series of talks in 2007-2008 that addressed the debates in the 18th century concerning freedom of speech. The result was Freedom of Speech: The History of an Idea, to be published this year by Bucknell University Press.

Author Reading | Lauren Shockey reads from her book Four Kitchens: My Life Behind the Burner in New York, Hanoi, Tel Aviv, and Paris

Food writer and French Culinary Institute graduate travels the globe as an unpaid kitchen apprentice, demystifying everything from haute cuisine at Senderens in Paris to molecular gastronomy at Manhattan's wd-50. In this illustrated lecture she chronicles the diffident curiosity of a female chef determined to learn, laugh, and cook in a professional kitchen. Her bosses include such celebrated chefs as Wylie Dufresne and Didier Corlou. Amid the cooking tips, gourmet foods, and exotic techniques, she is driven by a simple question: do diners prefer meals that soothe with flavor or those that surprise with technique? She illuminates the human elements of friendship and fatigue within the underpaid, unglamorous, and repetitive reality that is restaurant kitchen work.
