Giving life to an eighteen-channel musical composition, Tcherepnin will transform various materials (paper, cardboard, aluminum, copper) into flexible speakers and tactile filters of various sizes. Dispersed amidst the gallery space and variously reconfigured throughout the duration of the performance, these activated materials compose a network of sound fields, which move through different sound states and different modes of transmission. As these worlds of sound are assembled and reorganized in physical space, they open up into imagined spaces where sound bodies can dance and grow, taking shape to form intimate bonds with individual listeners.
Sergei Tcherepnin is a composer and performer of both electronic and acoustic music. His compositions have been featured in festivals internationally. His chamber and orchestral music has been performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, Dinosaur Annex, the American Symphony Orchestra and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, among others. His sonic works have been featured at music and art spaces in New York such as Casey Kaplan Gallery, Dia: Beacon, Chelsea Art Museum, Emily Harvey Foundation, and Momenta Art, and internationally at the ICA London, Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart, White Heat (Stuttgart), Modern Institute (Glasgow), Casco (Utrecht), Pro Choice (Vienna), and the Swiss Institute (Milan).
