Book Signing | Bernie Williams, forner Yankee, signs copies of his book Rhythms of the Game

Bernie Williams's ability to play baseball at a major-league level was directly influenced by his musical training and his deep understanding of the similarities between musical artistry and athletic performance. That understanding has led the former New York Yankees center fielder, along with musicians Dave Gluck and Bob Thompson, to write Rhythms of the Game (Hal Leonard Books, June 2011, $24.99). Through a series of conversations, narratives, and sidebars, Williams, Gluck, and Thompson reveal the influence of music and its rhythms on the game of baseball. Bernie Williams played center field for the New York Yankees from 1991-2006, winning a batting title, four Gold Gloves, and four World Series rings. He has recorded two albums, including Moving Forward in 2009, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

Concert | Composer Sergei Tcherepnin performs Giving Rein

Giving life to an eighteen-channel musical composition, Tcherepnin will transform various materials (paper, cardboard, aluminum, copper) into flexible speakers and tactile filters of various sizes. Dispersed amidst the gallery space and variously reconfigured throughout the duration of the performance, these activated materials compose a network of sound fields, which move through different sound states and different modes of transmission. As these worlds of sound are assembled and reorganized in physical space, they open up into imagined spaces where sound bodies can dance and grow, taking shape to form intimate bonds with individual listeners. Sergei Tcherepnin is a composer and performer of both electronic and acoustic music. His compositions have been featured in festivals internationally. His chamber and orchestral music has been performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players, the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, Dinosaur Annex, the American Symphony Orchestra and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, among others. His sonic works have been featured at music and art spaces in New York such as Casey Kaplan Gallery, Dia: Beacon, Chelsea Art Museum, Emily Harvey Foundation, and Momenta Art, and internationally at the ICA London, Kunstlerhaus Stuttgart, White Heat (Stuttgart), Modern Institute (Glasgow), Casco (Utrecht), Pro Choice (Vienna), and the Swiss Institute (Milan).

Screening | Award-Winning Documentary: Steve James' The Interrupters (2011)

Winner of the Special Jury Award at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three "Violence Interrupters" who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here), this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. The city was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape. 142 min. The film's main subjects, Ameena, Cobe and Eddie work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire, which believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. The singular mission of the "Violence Interrupters" - who have credibility on the streets because of their own personal histories - is to intervene in conflicts before they explode into violence. The Interrupters follows these three "Violence Interrupters" as they go about their work, and while doing so reveals their own inspired journeys of hope and redemption. "A gut-wrenching documentary" says Manohla Dargis of The New York Times.

Theater | Classical Theatre of Harlem presents Shakespeare's Henry V

Explore the brutally thoughtful, fiercely funny, belligerent diplomacy of King Henry V with The Classical Theatre of Harlem as they interpret William Shakespeare’s classic. Young King Henry V takes the throne, his dying father’s advice to “busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels” ringing in his ears. His reputation as a fun-loving lad who’s lived among the common folk inspires love from commoners and disregard from his enemies. He lays claim to France, and invades the country with a “band of brothers.” Join CTH’s powerful exploration of what it means for a king to bear the burdensome expectations of the crown – and the people to bear the expectations of the king – as Henry V works to win the hearts of all. Director Jenny Bennett pilots a nonstop, intense scrutiny of kings and citizens in this play that dissects humanity’s warmongering with gripping actors, a thrilling score and fierce dance.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
