Theater | Street Theater Company's Bamboozled, or The Real Reality Show

A rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production, free to all New Yorkers, will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. A lowly postman is overwhelmed by the tsunami of unhappiness he is carrying: pink slips, layoffs, businesses closings, Medicare terminations, hospital closings, teacher terminations and condolences sent to the Japanese. The past wars of this planet haunt him and the present wars torment him further. Merlin the Magician appears out of a Christmas card to enlighten him about the Faustian contract we have made with Nuclear Energy. Screening | Award-Winning Documentary: Steve James' The Interrupters (2011)

Winner of the Special Jury Award at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three "Violence Interrupters" who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here), this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. The city was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape. 142 min. The film's main subjects, Ameena, Cobe and Eddie work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire, which believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. The singular mission of the "Violence Interrupters" - who have credibility on the streets because of their own personal histories - is to intervene in conflicts before they explode into violence. The Interrupters follows these three "Violence Interrupters" as they go about their work, and while doing so reveals their own inspired journeys of hope and redemption. "A gut-wrenching documentary" says Manohla Dargis of The New York Times.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino / François Ladrezo & Alka Omeka

This rare, much-anticipated reunion of the groundbreaking mid-’70s workshop ensemble will offer even more proof of the Bronx’s status as the “Boogie Down” borough. By seamlessly blending rhythms from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and their own Fort Apache backyard, brother team Jerry and Andy Gonzalez turned their all-star ensemble into pioneers of the sound of Latino music’s next generation. Grupo will perform selections from their two landmark albums along with material from their soon-to-be-released tribute to mambo pioneer Arsenio Rodriguez. Songwriter-percussionist François Ladrezo, among the true masters of the traditional gwo ka music of Guadeloupe and a leader of the Akiyo cultural movement, leads a band that shares Grupo Folklorico’s appetite for exploration of his music’s Afro-Caribbean roots.

Theater | Classical Theatre of Harlem presents Shakespeare's Henry V

Explore the brutally thoughtful, fiercely funny, belligerent diplomacy of King Henry V with The Classical Theatre of Harlem as they interpret William Shakespeare’s classic. Young King Henry V takes the throne, his dying father’s advice to “busy giddy minds with foreign quarrels” ringing in his ears. His reputation as a fun-loving lad who’s lived among the common folk inspires love from commoners and disregard from his enemies. He lays claim to France, and invades the country with a “band of brothers.” Join CTH’s powerful exploration of what it means for a king to bear the burdensome expectations of the crown – and the people to bear the expectations of the king – as Henry V works to win the hearts of all. Director Jenny Bennett pilots a nonstop, intense scrutiny of kings and citizens in this play that dissects humanity’s warmongering with gripping actors, a thrilling score and fierce dance.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
