Concert | Reeds, Oboes & Magnificats with Double Entendre Music Ensemble and Renaissance Street Singers

Music lovers are invited to bring lunch, join friends and relax to enjoy a taste of New York’s eclectic “underground” music scene. Double Entendre Music Ensemble promotes the advancement and awareness of double reed music by sponsoring high quality performances, organizing educational sessions and commissioning new works. The group has presented concerts at the Chelsea Museum, the Goethe Institute, the Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park, as well as in Grand Central Terminal with the MUNY program. Double Entendre was recently awarded a grant from Meet the Composer to commission an oboe quartet by Martin Bresnick. The piece was premiered in Brooklyn at the Old Stone House and was recently performed in Arizona at the International Double Reed Society convention. Double Entendre released its first CD entitled “A Christmas Reeding” in 2008. The organization is a registered vendor of educational programming with the NYC Department of Education. Since 1973, The Renaissance Street Singers of New York, directed by John Hetland, have sung 15th- and 16th-century music a cappella on the sidewalks and in the public spaces of New York City. The motivation is love for the music and the wish to share it with others. They sing polyphonic motets, hymns, magnificats, Psalms, mass sections and other sacred music by Guillaume du Fay, Jean de Ockeghem, Josquin des Prez, Ludwig Senfl, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, William Byrd, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Manuel Cardoso and their contemporaries.

Book Discussion | Book Club: The Help by Kathryn Stockett

"Four peerless actors render an array of sharply defined black and white characters in the nascent years of the civil rights movement. They each handle a variety of Southern accents with aplomb and draw out the daily humiliation and pain the maids are subject to, as well as their abiding affection for their white charges. The actors handle the narration and dialogue so well that no character is ever stereotyped, the humor is always delightful, and the listener is led through the multilayered stories of maids and mistresses. The novel is a superb intertwining of personal and political history in Jackson, Miss., in the early 1960s, but this reading gives it a deeper and fuller power." - Publishers Weekly

Theater | Classic Greek Drama: Sophocles' Antigone

Xoregos Performing Company presents Sophocles' stunning drama. The company continues its tradition of Greek classical productions with this drama of the fate of Cedipus' four children, Polynices, Eteocles, Ismene and Antigone. When Antigone flouts Creon's law, is it rebellion or heroism? Does a ruler's law supersede those of the gods? Should an individual's beliefs challenge a King's edict? Reminiscent of many current events as well as WW II, this exciting exploration of personal courage rings true today as it did when it was written in 442 B.C.

Screening | Jem Cohen's Chain (2004): The Mundane and the Mysterious

As regional character disappears and corporate culture homogenizes our surroundings, it is increasingly hard to tell where you are. Malls, theme parks, hotels, and corporate centers worldwide have joined into one “superlandscape,” which in this film shapes the lives of two women caught within it. One works for a corporation; the other is a young drifter. Shot over six years, Jem Cohen’s visually striking work weaves together documentation and fiction, and the mundane and the mysterious, into a meditation on the spaces we inhabit. 99 min. Filmmaker Q&A will follow screening.

Concert | Latin Sounds: Joe Bataan / Johnny Colón / DJ Turmix / We Like It Like That

Joe Bataan, called the "King of Latin Soul," was influenced by the melodic sounds of doo-wop and the energy of Latin music that were the hallmarks of his Spanish Harlem neighborhood. The famed Fania Records found this intersection of sound and culture enticing and propelled Bataan to become a major force in the “Latin Boogaloo” music scene with hits like “Gypsy Woman” and “My Cloud.” Johnny Colón is an acclaimed musician and a pioneer of the “Latin Boogaloo” movement. His celebrated album, Boogaloo Blues became an instant classic and helped set the tone for this era in Latin music history. With other successful albums such as Boogaloo ’67 and Move Over, Colón went on to found the East Harlem Music School, the first music school devoted to salsa music. DJ Turmix, originally from Barcelona, arrived in NYC in 2008. He is a specialist in 60’s Latin Boogaloo and an inveterate vinyl collector. He hosts the monthly LET’S BOOGALOO party at Nublu. In 1965, on the verge of abandoning Latin music, a generation of young Latinos in NYC discovers Latin Boogaloo, a musical style mixing English and Spanish lyrics, with Afro-Cuban, jazz, rock and R&B rhythms and melodies. Featuring original interviews with legends like Joe Bataan, Johnny Colón, Ricardo Ray and others, Mathew Ramirez Warren’s documentary, We Like It Like That explores the story of the Latin Boogaloo era and seeks to understand its legacy and context in history.

Screening | Award-Winning Documentary: Steve James' The Interrupters (2011)

Winner of the Special Jury Award at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, The Interrupters tells the moving and surprising stories of three "Violence Interrupters" who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed. From acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here), this film is an unusually intimate journey into the stubborn persistence of violence in our cities. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, The Interrupters captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. The city was besieged by high-profile incidents, most notably the brutal beating of Derrion Albert, a Chicago High School student, whose death was caught on videotape. 142 min. The film's main subjects, Ameena, Cobe and Eddie work for an innovative organization, CeaseFire, which believes that the spread of violence mimics the spread of infectious diseases, and so the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. The singular mission of the "Violence Interrupters" - who have credibility on the streets because of their own personal histories - is to intervene in conflicts before they explode into violence. The Interrupters follows these three "Violence Interrupters" as they go about their work, and while doing so reveals their own inspired journeys of hope and redemption. "A gut-wrenching documentary" says Manohla Dargis of The New York Times.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
