Festival | Float: Field of Dreams, Artworks and Performances

Float is a biennial series of ephemeral and interactive artworks and performances. Featuring Chris Verene: The Self-Esteem Salon with Jessica Grable, "The Self-Preservation Series" - New York artist Chris Verene presents a new installation of his ongoing, live-action performance artwork cycle, The Self-Esteem Salon, established in 1996. For Socrates Sculpture Park, Verene teams up with friend, performance artist and sculptor, Jessica Grable, to create the largest version of the performance ever staged entitled The Self-Esteem Salon with Jessica Grable: The Self-Preservation Series. Verene and Grable are working together to build an ensemble of plant life and costumes emphasizing the human need for self-preservation, a custom topiary garden made from cultivated invasive plant species, a 40-foot yurt sanctuary to help strangers/participants make a sincere and lasting change in their lives. The project is something like a day spa, a short time spent in therapy that will have positive results on one's personal life. The artist and his staff of "Group Facilitators" welcome visitors, clients and audience members throughout the duration of the piece, offering a variety of public and private experiences including cognitive therapy, massage (touch and non-touch), costume construction, audio therapy, and other activities that the artist has found to raise clients' self-esteem over the past thirteen years of practice.

The production, free to all New Yorkers, will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. A lowly postman is overwhelmed by the tsunami of unhappiness he is carrying: pink slips, layoffs, businesses closings, Medicare terminations, hospital closings, teacher terminations and condolences sent to the Japanese. The past wars of this planet haunt him and the present wars torment him further. Dance Performance | Dance: Cecilia Marta Dance Company / Francine E. Ott/The Walk

After many years of traveling the globe, Cecilia Marta returned to NYC with a vision to bring together a diverse and extraordinary group of dancers that would create the Cecilia Marta Dance Company. The company’s objective is to speak through the language of dance about the ritualistic rhythms and magical experiences Cecilia encountered throughout her life, and as a child growing up in Panama. As a multicultural dance company, CMDC is committed to celebrating diversity and unity by melding contemporary and traditional ballet, Latin roots infused with a world attitude, and nuances of earthy funk and soul. Francine E. Ott is an accomplished dancer, choreographer and educator with numerous credits under her belt including Jacob’s Pillow and The Mark Morris Dance Center. Ott’s debut at SummerStage will find her company, The Walk performing, “A Delicate Balance” a work that is inspired by verses in the biblical books, Ezekiel and Ephesians. This piece shows how God can transform, restore and protect the human spirit. The choreographic movement is a spiritual hybrid of hip hop, house, modern, and African dance. These diverse styles of dance have been organically fused together to create a constant flow of the body, while unfolding a universal story of loss and redemption. Also, a Master Class: This class combines elements of all dance styles and focuses on discovering ways to “color” one’s movements with a dancer’s grace and strength and will feature live drumming.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: As You Like It

Pulse Ensemble Theatre's seventh Harlem Summer Shakespeare production is a multi-ethnic, open-air production of William Shakespeare’s comedy. As is the tradition with Pulse Theatre Ensemble’s Harlem Summer Shakespeare, this production keeps Shakespeare’s language intact whilst updating the world in which the characters live. In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
