Screening | Korean Film: Ha Yu's A Dirty Carnival (2006)

Variety says that A DIRTY CARNIVAL, “elevates the genre to an epic narrative level” and they’re right. This movie about the sudden rise, and even more sudden fall, of a low level gangster is a tour de force of filmmaking, full of sharp dialogue, nail-biting set pieces and emotions that hit you like a baseball bat to the head. Only a modest hit when it was released, Yoo Ha’s gangster flick has gone on to become a contemporary classic and is now widely considered one of the best of the breed. Full of razor-sharp performances and given a Latin cha-cha beat, A DIRTY CARNIVAL takes all the genre’s cliches, turns them inside out and makes them new again. 141 min.

Concert | Latin/Hip-Hop Fusion with Bachata Heightz

Born and raised in Washington Heights, Jerry Garcia, Jonathan Garcia, Jeffrey Cruz, Aneudy Hernandez and Diego Capellan formed Bachata Heightz to explore their musical interests while staying off the streets. The group was inspired by the tropical music of their Dominican roots as well as hip-hop and R&B. Combining these varying sounds, Bachata Heightz created urban bachata, which highlights their Latin heritage yet incorporates modern beats. As one of the first pioneers of this unique sound, they showcased it on their recording debut with Hector Acosta on “Me Puedo Matar,” which reached the top five on the Billboard Latin Tropical chart. Soon after, they released their inaugural full-length album, The First featuring the singles “Te Busco” and “No Sabes Del Amor,” becoming one of most influential groups in the Latin music scene.

Author Reading | Wayne Koestenbaum reads from his book Humiliation

With an unusual, disarming blend of autobiography and cultural commentary, Wayne Koestenbaum takes us through a spectrum of mortifying circumstances—in history, literature, art, current events, music, film, and his own life. His generous disclosures and brilliant observations go beyond prurience to create a poetics of abasement. Inventive, poignant, erudite, and playful, Humiliation plunges into one of the most disquieting of human experiences, with reflections at once emboldening and humane.

Screening | Czech Film on a Rooftop: Jiri Menzel's The Snowdrop Festival (1983)

Acclaimed Czech director Jiri Menzel has pulled off another successful collaboration with writer Bohumil Hrabal in this light, sometimes saucy farce about two warring hunting factions in a small village and how they end up in a rousing, comic showdown. The village community is made up of a broad spectrum of eccentrics, from the farmer who escorts his goats to pasture in an old Pontiac car, to the sign painters who put up their handiwork slogans in the most unlikely places; there is humor enough for everyone. Then one day three hunters from one faction chase after a boar they found in the woods, and the wounded animal runs into a schoolhouse for refuge. Since the schoolhouse is in neutral territory, it becomes the scene for a reckoning between the two hunting factions. The upshot is a wild time in the local pub -- with some unexpected consequences. 83 min. In Czech with English subtitles. Movie starts at dusk.
