Theater | Street Theater Company's Bamboozled, or The Real Reality Show

A rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production, free to all New Yorkers, will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. A lowly postman is overwhelmed by the tsunami of unhappiness he is carrying: pink slips, layoffs, businesses closings, Medicare terminations, hospital closings, teacher terminations and condolences sent to the Japanese. The past wars of this planet haunt him and the present wars torment him further. Merlin the Magician appears out of a Christmas card to enlighten him about the Faustian contract we have made with Nuclear Energy. The hero is redeemed by the vision of a cleaner, more harmonious planet lying in the alternative power of the Sun, the Wind and the unfailing power of the people.

Concert | Salute to Hip-Hop: Rakim / EPMD / Funkmaster Flex

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rakim’s iconic album Paid in Full, which has garnered praise from outlets such as Rolling Stone, who has deemed it, “the greatest hip-hop album of all time.” Few artists have had as great an impact on the development of hip-hop as Rakim. Recognized as one of the “Masters of the Microphone,” Rakim first exploded onto the scene with the release of the iconic single, “Eric B. is President” which showcased his intricately intellectual lyrics. EPMD is famed as one of the pioneers of hip-hop. Their debut album Strictly Business topped the R&B chart, as did their follow-up Unfinished Business. They continued releasing hits such as “It’s My Thing” and “You Gots to Chill,” which showcased their talent and stylistic delivery over minimal beats. EPMD revolutionized rap as they took listeners on “a funky joy ride through a gangster-fantasy universe,” according to Rolling Stone magazine. For more than a decade, DJ Funkmaster Flex has reigned as America’s number one hip-hop radio personality and reaches more than two million listeners a week on his radio show. Join Funkmaster Flex as he hosts Salute to Hip-Hop, a nationwide series of concerts that celebrates hip-hop and honors the generations of artists that have shaped it and carry on its influence today.
